20 Books Of Summer...

My dear friend, Meredith, posted about 20 Books Of Summer over on her blog, Dolce Bellezza and just reading about it, I knew I had to join in. So, I headed over to Cathy's blog, 746 Books, to read all about it - she's the creator of 20 Books Of Summer reading challenge.  Basically, pick 20, 15, or 10 books you already own that you want to read over the summer (June 1st - September 1st) and start reading.

Here's my tentative list (I'm not going to lie, I might change it around at some point, because I am a mood reader):

What do you think? Not a bad list, eh? I've had som of those on my TBR for ages, so I figured it was about time to dive in. Let me know if you've read any of these and what you thought of them. Also, let me know if you are going to join in on 20 Books Of Summer.

Wishing you a great rest of the week! Happy reading!

The Final Maisie Dobbs book...

(Thank you to Soho Press and Edelweiss for my copy of the book!)

I was able to get my hands on a copy of the final book in the series, which I am so grateful for. The Comfort of Ghosts will be released on June 4th, so definitely make sure to get your hands on a copy!

I was so excited to read the book and jumped right in. I was sad to think that this would be the final time we'd find out what Maisie was up to, but also happy to find out where/how Winspear would leave her. And, well, I'm loathe to admit it, but I didn't really enjoy the final book. In fact, I was really disappointed with it. I found myself annoyed with Maisie a lot throughout the story, which surprised me and made me sad since it would be the last book I read her in. Also, the 'job' was rather predictable and I didn't really care for it or the characters involved. I was also upset that Billy was barely in the story - although his son's story was heartbreaking. Oh, and the revelation about James and Enid was ridiculous. The fact that Maisie suspected all along and then was proven correctly (big surprise) was just unnecessary. And, I didn't like that we still barely know her husband. Overall, the book didn't feel like it was the way to go for ending this wonderful series. Then again, maybe I expected too much. After all, I do love this series to bits. So, any ending would disappoint, wouldn't it?

Let me know what you think when you read the final story in Maisie's life. I'm hoping when I reread it I'll find myself falling into it.

Hope you have a great day! Happy reading!

The 100 Day Project is complete - Hurrah!

I did it! I finished The 100 Day Project and I feel so proud of myself. In other years, I've started the project and have always given up after a week or two.  This year I was determined to complete it and I did. I still can't believe it. My goal for seeing the project through was to prove to myself that I can be consistent when it comes to art projects and writing projects. Especially, because I want to focus on my writing and I knew that this would be the perfect way to do so.

For 100 days I was going to write a blog post a day for either blog and that would count as my writing. And, I did it. Now, the question is, will I continue writing a blog post a day, or will I stop. Also, what writing project should I start next? Hmm...the 100 days has definitely given me lots to think about and I'm excited about it.

And now, I'm off to write some to-do lists. Happy reading!

The Wildcat Behind Glass by Alki Wei

(Thank you to Restless Books for providing with a copy of this book!)

about book:

For Melia and her sister Myrto, summer means a break from Grandfather’s history lessons and weeks of running free at the seaside with their ragtag group of friends. Best of all, cousin Nikos will visit and tell his fabulous stories about the taxidermied wildcat, which opens its blue glass eye when it wants to do good deeds and its black one when it makes trouble. The black eye must be open lately because all the adults have been acting strangely, arguing about politics and fearful of the police. Soon even the children are divided—who can Melia trust? And can the wildcat help keep her family safe?

Set in Greece during the 1930s, when the nation was torn apart by fascism, The Wildcat Behind Glass is an unforgettable tale of family, humanity, and what it means to be free. From its 1963 release to the dozens of international editions and honors that followed including a Mildred L. Batchelder Award, the novel has enchanted generations of young readers. Now, a fresh English translation—the first in over 50 years—breathes new life into the timeless story.

my thoughts:

A marvelous and unforgettable story that I can't wait to read again and again. The Wildcat Behind Glass by Alki Wei is a wonderful children's book that I would wholeheartedly recommend to everyone. It's a definite must-read!

I loved the story, the characters, the setting, and the writing - it was all superb! I found myself easily engaged right from the start and would not put the book down for anything. I enjoyed every second I spent with Melia, Myrto, Nikos, and the wildcat with a blue glass eye. Their summer adventures made for fun and wondrous storytelling.  And, that is all I will share about the book, because you must experience it for yourself. It's such a special treat to read - you will LOVE it!!

Make sure to get your hands on a copy ASAP - you won't regret it! And, make sure to tell your friends about this story, too - they are going to fall in deep, too.

Thank you to Restless Books for providing me with a copy of this book!

My Friday Five...

1. Therapy. I finally made an appointment. We'll see how it goes. Wish me luck!

3. Stephen King's new book, You Like It Darker. I love short stories. And, I love Stephen King's stories. So, I just know I'm in for a treat.

4. Weather. The heat is unbearable and summer hasn't even fully arrived yet. Yikes! Plus, hurricane season starts up next month. Double Yikes!

5.  Planners. I'm still trying new ones. I just bought an undated one at TJ Max. Ugh. I need to quit and just use what I'm already using and own. Bad habits, eh?

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Happy reading!

Serabelle: Where the Wealthy Come to Play by Tavi Taylor Black

(Thank you to the author and TLC Book Tours for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book: (summary from Goodreads)

An island sheltered from modern progress. Strict lines between servants and masters. Will crossing them leave her fatally exposed?

Bar Harbor, Maine. 1913. Mabel Rae is smart, reckless, and naïve. So when the ambitious seventeen-year-old joins the staff at a rocky cliffside cottage, she willingly lets the boisterous estate owner's improper advances sweep her off her feet. And the slender young woman dismisses the vulnerability of her position when she discovers she's pregnant with his unacknowledged child.

Brought harshly down to earth after she's caught up in the machinations of a family feud, Mabel decides it's time to take matters into her own hands. But with no money and few rights, she fears a forced marriage to the brutish gardener is her only socially acceptable option.

Is her future forever stunted, or can she become a beacon of change?

In a classic upstairs-downstairs tale, award-winning author Tavi Taylor Black spins an intricate web of idealism's battle against harsh reality. Set at a time when suffrage was at its height, temperance was gaining momentum, and war loomed in Europe, this spellbinding novel shines a light on inequities we still face today.

Serabelle is a darkly humorous work of historical fiction. If you like intricate relationships, lyrical prose, and stories that tackle serious issues, then you'll love Tavi Taylor Black's vivid portrait of the Gilded Age.

my thoughts:

Love, love, loved this excellent story by Tavi Taylor Black! Serabelle: Where the Wealthy Come to Play is historical fiction at its very best!

Set in the early 1900s in Maine, this is the story of Mabel Rae, a young woman working at the luxe Serabelle, a large estate owned by the Ainsworth-Hunt family. Unfortunately, she catches the eye of the owner and winds up pregnant. Soon, she is caught up in a family drama that leaves her learning one hard truth after another. Fortunately, she does have a friend who manages to help her out, except the option isn't a guaranteed happily ever after. So, the question is, will Mabel Rae ever find happiness? Whoa!

I really enjoyed this story and reading about Maine - such a beautiful setting. Plus, it's always fun to find out about different time periods, like the early 1900s - makes for a fascinating history lesson. And, the characters were definitely interesting to get to know. All in all, this was such a treat to read! I would happily recommend it to everyone. Definitely check it out!

Monday Musings...

Tracker is over for now. I'm already missing it and can't wait for the next season to begin later in the fall. Such a great show! I'm wondering if I should read the books...or, just re-watch it, again.

I started watching Supernatural and I'm liking it. I like the dynamic between Sam and Dean. I'm not sure I'll keep watching it though - mainly, because some of the episodes creep me out. I used to love scary movies and shows, but lately, not so much.

I'm reading an X-Files book and really enjoying it. I've always loved the show and have rewatched it several times, but I've never read a book. I'm glad I finally am.

I booked an appointment with a therapist for this week. I needed to and I'm glad I did. Wish me luck.

Hope you're having a great start to the week! Happy reading!

My Friday Five...

1. Tracker. I'm officially obsessed with this show. I love it! And, we finally met the older brother, Russell. Love seeing Colter with his family, so we can figure out the dynamics and the truth as they each know it. I still have so many questions, which I love. It means I need to keep watching the show - LOL!

2.  Books. The Secrets Next Door by Sally Royer-Derr. It's a mystery suspense story. I enjoyed parts of it - some of those twists made my jaw drop. However, the story itself was a bit too predictable and could definitely have been edited much more. All in all, it was a quick read that I did sort of like. Plus, it was a nice break from Rushdie's, Knife. I'm loving his writing and the book, but I'm taking my time with it. Knife is the kind of book that needs to be mulled over, not just devoured.

3. Mental Health. I feel a bit better, which is nice. Except, I feel like anxiety is simmering just under the surface, so...yeah, it's still a bit rough this week.

4. TV. I'm still rewatching Grimm and LOVING it. I wish they had kept the show going a bit longer. Oh well, it's fun to watch again and again. I'm thinking of rewatching The West Wing - I haven't in awhile, so maybe it's time.

5. Music. Let It Be by The Beatles. I'm still playing it on repeat after re-watching Let It Be. Such a great film and such a great album. Love it!

Wishing you all a great weekend. Happy reading!

The House That Horror Built by Christina Henry

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book: (summary from Goodreads)

A single mother working in the gothic mansion of a reclusive horror director stumbles upon terrifying secrets.

Harry Adams loves horror movies, so it’s no coincidence that she accepted a job cleaning house for horror-movie director Javier Castillo. His forbidding gray-stone Chicago mansion, Bright Horses, is filled from top to bottom with terrifying props and costumes as well as glittering awards from his career making movies that thrilled audiences—until family tragedy and scandal forced him to vanish from the industry.

Javier values discretion, and Harry always tries to keep the house immaculate, her head down, and her job safe. Then she hears noises from behind a locked door, noises that sound remarkably like a human voice calling for help. Harry knows not asking questions is a vital part of keeping her job, but she soon discovers that the house may be home to secrets she can’t ignore.

my thoughts:

1. I love the title of the book! The House That Horror Built. How fun does that sound? Makes me want to pick it up ASAP!

2. That book's cover is ace! I love how creepy and retro is looks - reminds me of old horror films, which is perfect for this story.

3. The summary of the book sounds soooo good!! A creepy mansion. Scandal and tragedy that forces you to vanish from the public eye. Noises behind a locked door. Talk about all the right ingredients for a spooky read!

4. Here's a sneak peek of the book (an excerpt from the book thanks to the publisher!):

Javier Castillo had brown hair going gray, brown eyes behind steel-rimmed spectacles, was on the shorter side (though not as short as Harry, who had reached five feet at age thirteen and never grown again) and overall had the completely nondescript appearance of any random person on the block. He was the sort who would never attract attention unless you knew who he was, would never be whispered about if he went to the grocery store-which he never did. He never went anywhere if he could help it.

Because of this, very few people in his neighborhood realized one of the world's greatest living horror directors lived among them: Javier Castillo, director and writer of fifteen films, most of them visually groundbreaking, genre-defying masterpieces. His film The Monster had won the Oscar for Best Picture five years earlier and swept most of the other major categories along the way, including Director and Original Screenplay. The world had waited breathlessly for the announcement of his next project.

Then a shocking, unthinkable incident happened, and Castillo withdrew into his California home, and there was no mention of potential new movies while the paparazzi stood outside his house with their cameras ready for any sign of life within.

After one too many wildfires came too close to his residence he decided to move, somewhat incongruously, to Chicago. He packed up his legendary and possibly priceless collection of movie props and memorabilia and brought them to a cold Midwestern city where the last major urban burning was decidedly in the distant past.

If it wasn't for those California wildfires Harry would still be collecting unemployment, frantically responding to job ads with a horde of other desperate people, never hearing back, wondering how long Gabe would believe her tight smile followed by, "Everything's going to be fine."

But instead there was this miracle, this miracle of a strange and reclusive director who needed someone to help him clean his collection of weird stuff three days a week, and so Harry climbed up the stairs and listened to Javier Castillo huff and puff.

The second floor was essentially one big room divided by a load-bearing archway. The stairs curved up to the southwest corner of this room and stopped there. The stair to the third floor was on the northeast corner, which always made Harry think of a Clue board, with its seemingly random staircases scattered all around. There was a black railing running along from the southeast corner of the room to the top of the stairs to keep people from falling straight down the first-floor stairwell.

The bucket of cleaning supplies was ready at the top of the stairs. Harry and Mr. Castillo each took a long-handled duster. Mr. Castillo went to the far end of the room while Harry started on the closest figure.

The blue room wasn't entirely blue. The carpet was blue-and Harry really thought he ought to get rid of the carpet; it collected dust and it was such a difficult room to vacuum. The wallpaper had blue flowers patterned on it, blue flowers that made Harry think of Agatha Christie's story "The Blue Geranium."

Except that's not quite right, Harry thought. In "The Blue Geranium" the color of the flower on the wall changed to blue because of a chemical in the air-proof of poison.

Nobody was in danger of poisoning in Bright Horses. Nobody lived there except Mr. Castillo-and his props, of course, and some of those were so lifelike that Harry sometimes thought they really were watching her, just out of the corner of her eye. When she'd turn, the figures would be still and glassy-eyed, the artificial pupils staring off into the middle distance, never having focused on her or anything else at all.

5.  Overall, I really enjoyed diving into this horror novel. It quickly drew me in and kept me turning pages, faster and faster to find out if I was right - I had a suspicion of what was happening - plus, I wanted to read more about the house and the characters. And, I loved all the creepy vibes throughout the story - they really helped build up the tension of the mystery and provided such a great atmosphere. I definitely found The House That Horror Built to be a fun read. I would recommend it to fans of Christina Henry and to anyone looking for a thrilling story. Make sure to check it out!

TBR Book...

Out June 3rd and I can't wait. I'm excited to read what Crichton was working on before he passed away and to see how Patterson finished it. Should be a right treat. Or, at least I'm hoping it is. Then again, I've been wanting to reread Jurassic Park, so maybe that's why I'm looking forward to a new Crichton. What about you? What do you think of this book?

Hope you are having a great Tuesday! Mine's been a bit bumpy (thanks to anxiety), but I'm trying to push myself through it. Anyhow, take care and happy reading!

Monday Musings...

I've been a busy bee all morning and it has been great. Especially, since this past weekend I had anxiety attacks that almost turned into panic attacks. Ack! The worst! So, I was happy to finally feel a bit more like myself. Lately, the depression has been worse, so I'm thinking that has a lot to do with it. Ugh. I just have to work harder on beating it. Wish me luck!

I started rewatching Grimm and am loving it (again) - such a fun show! I'm still reading Knife by Salman Rushdie. Such a great book! And, I'm still humming The Beatles after watching Let It Be.

I bought another planner at Target the other day, which is crazy because I just set up my Filofax rings planner. And yet, the only one I seem to actually use is my Smythson one - for general planning. The other two are for book blogging. How ridiculous! LOL!

Anyhow, wishing you all a lovely week! Happy reading!

My Friday Five...

1. Sluggish. That is how I felt at the start of the week and I'm still feeling it. Ugh. Thankful the weekend is nigh.

2.  Book. I read Under the Surface by Diana Urban. I wanted a quick and easy read - this fit the bill.

The story is about a group of high schoolers who get trapped in the catacombs - yikes! They were on their way to an underground party and quickly realize that things are not as they seem. Uh, oh! Yeah, the premise sounded good, but the execution was 'meh' - I feel like they could have edited so much more of the text - way too wordy! Oh, well.

3. Podcast. I'm listening to the Scandal rewatch one - Unpacking the Toolbox with Katie Lowes and Guillermo Diaz aka Quinn and Huck. I'm enjoying listening to them talk about the show - makes me want to rewatch - again.

4. TV shows. I needed a laugh from feeling so sluggish, so I've been finishing my rewatch of Seinfeld. LOLs for days.

5. Music. None. Since I feel so tired, I need to concentrate more, so I've kept the music off. Ugh. I hate that. I love having music in the background. I'm going to start playing some Beatles today. Especially, since the Let It Be movie on Disney+ today.  Love it!

Wishing you a groovy weekend! Happy reading!

Another TBR Book...

James is one of my favorite British bands, so when I heard that lead singer, Tim Booth, had a book coming out...well, I had to add it to my TBR list. How could I not? I love his lyrics, so, I'm sure I'll love his writing. Or, at least I'm willing to give it a go and see.

Here's a summary of the book (via Goodreads):

Meet Seth Brakes. Musician. Reluctant romantic. Inherent troublemaker. Addict.

And three hundred and twenty days sober.

After a near-death experience, Seth is carving a new path for himself. Having reformed the band - the infamous Lucky Fuckers - things are looking up for gigs are falling back into the diary, he's in love and finally getting back to what he enjoys writing music.

That is until his past starts to creep up on him . . .

A dark comedy that is painfully honest, original and dynamically told, When I Died For the First Time is a raw account of a man tested his uppermost limits, hitting legendary highs and crashing to catastrophic lows. It's a tale of second chances, love lost and gained, and coming back to a story that stays with you long after you've turned the last page.

Definitely sounds very rocker to me, so I'm willing to give it a read. Let me know if you've heard of the book, or of the band.

Happy reading!!

TBR Book...

A bookish friend posted about this lovely on their IG account, and I loved the cover and the title, so I had to add it to my TBR list.  Here's what the book is about: (summary from Goodreads)'What if we decided to try and find him?'

'What on earth are you on about?' she said. 'How are we going to catch the Yorkshire Ripper, when the police haven't even managed to?'

I sighed. Her questioning my ideas was a recent and unwelcome element to our friendship. But it was a valid point. How would we catch him? We needed some sort of plan, a way of gathering clues and putting them into order.

I thought about what the policeman had said about structure, and then about Aunty Jean and her notebook, and the idea I had hardened like toffee. I knew exactly what we needed to do.

'We'll make a list,' I said. 'A list of the people and things we see that are suspicious.

And then . . . And then we'll investigate them.'

The List of Suspicious Things is a tender and moving coming of age story about family, friendship and community. Sometimes the strongest connections are found in the most unlikely of places.

How great does that sound? Reading that, I'm hooked. I can't wait to dive into this one. Let me know if you've read it or plan to.

Hope you are having a terrific Tuesday! Happy reading!

Monday Musings...

Sleep has eluded me for so long. I finally tried sleep patches, but they did not work. Ack! Last night when I finally fell asleep, I slept hart and it was bliss. Of course, I had to wake up early (4:30am) and I was so sluggish. I still feel sleepy.  My sleep debt is too high. I want to go back to bed, but my to-do list won't let me. So, I have decided my dream vacation is to rent a very nice hotel room and sleep for days. LOL! If only.

Aside from lack of sleep, I am finally going to declutter. My sister wants to have a garage sale soonish, so I want to gather some items to include in it. I figure this might give me the push I need to start decluttering. Wish me luck! My office is out of control - yikes!

I'm too tired to muse about anything else. So, I will let you go for now. Hope you are having a wonderful Monday morning. Happy reading!

My Friday Five...

1. Books. I've bought a few recently and have added a few more to my TBR list. There are just too many good ones out there. And, there are quite a few old favorites I want to get in a different editions. My bookish lists are never-ending. Yikes!

Here's one I just bought:

2.  Tracker. I am loving this show. It is so good. Although the last episode wasn't my favorite - I felt it was like a filler episode. I am looking forward to the next one - we finally get to meet his sister and find out what she thinks of her brother and their dad's death. I'm curious to see how she turned out. I didn't really care for their mom - she's rather shifty. So, it'll be good to get a feel for what the sister thinks. Although I'm more curious about his older brother. And, I want to know what made Colter choose to be a tracker- I feel like it's the kind of job that will always keep him alone. Is that what he really wants? I have so many questions. What about you? Are you watching this show? What do you think of it?

3.  Planner. I ordered some new inserts. They were on sale, so I figured it was okay to do so - considering I'm supposed on to be a no-spend. Ugh. I want to use my personal sized rings, so I figured I'd go for it. By the way, how crazy is it that some companies are already having pre-orders for 2025 planners?! That is way too soon, right? That is making me not want to order anything from them. I'm barely committed to my current planners and I have to commit to 2025 ones already? No, thank you!

4.  Nail polish. I bought some cool hot pink polish that I am loving. I thought it would cheer me up - the boost of color. So far, I am loving it.

5. Music. I'm listening to my 'liked' songs on Spotify. It's a good mix, so it's fun. It has Jenny Lewis, The National, The Cure, James, Taylor Swift, REM, The Beatles, and so many more. Definitely keeps my mood boosted.

Hope you have a great weekend! May the Fourth be with you! Happy reading!

Love, love, loved this unputdownable story by Tennille Marie. It's the first book in her new Waldron Hearts series and it is fantastic! And, did I mentioned that it's her debut novel! Talk about hitting it out of the park!

So, what did I love about this book?

1. The characters were the best! I really enjoyed getting to know them and rooting for them - Hazel, Ruthie, and Joel.

3. The writing. It is top notch! I found myself easily immersed in the lives of these characters and wanting to find out what would happen next. Plus, the 50s and 60s time period - such a great setting!

Currently reading...

My mental health needed this. I just found out about this book and had to have it. I love frogs and I love self-care, so it was a win-win for me. Have any of you picked up this cute little tome. It has a lot of great affirmations that are hitting the spot with me right now. And, the illustrations are the best. I'm loving this book!

Hope you are having a wonderful May 1st! Happy reading!
