Let Me Be Like Water: A Novel by S.K. Perry

(Thank you to the publisher and TLC Book Tours for providing me with a copy of this book!)
about book:

‘Intimate, ruthless, tender: this book is like medicine for the soul.’ Nina George, author of The Little Paris Bookshop

A beautifully poignant and poetic debut about love, loss, friendship, and ultimately, starting over.

Twenty-something Holly has moved to Brighton to escape. But now that she’s here, sitting on a bench, listening to the sea sway, how is she supposed to fill the void her boyfriend left when he died?

She had thought she’d want to be on her own, but when she meets Frank, a retired magician who has experienced his own loss, the tide begins to shift. A moving and powerful debut, Let Me Be Like Water is a book about the extraordinariness hiding in everyday life; of lost and new connections; of loneliness and friendship.

“[A] moving debut… by the book’s satisfying conclusion, readers will feel they have grown alongside loving and resilient Holly.”–PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

“A beautiful and gut-wrenching exploration of a woman defining herself after a monumental loss.”–KIRKUS REVIEWS

“Raw, visceral and confident… this is an affecting debut.”–THE DAILY MAIL (UK)

my thoughts:

An emotional and moving story that will haunt you for days.  I absolutely LOVED S.K. Perry's novel, Let Me Be Like Water.

Holly's boyfriend has died and she is in deep emotional pain.  Everyone she turns she is reminded of him and their life together.  So, she moves from London to Brighton.  She wants to be near the water and she wants to be away from the city that reminds her of an old life that is no more.  However, Brighton doesn't turn out the way she thought it would.  Instead of escaping her past, she is once again reminded of it.  Holly meets Frank, a retired magician who has experienced loss, too.  Through Frank, she begins to meet other people who have also experienced loss.  Before she knows it, she is working through her grief via an unofficial support group - her new friends and their stories help her to move forward.  Its sad, heartbreaking, and hopeful.  Friendship grows into family, with the connections that Holly makes in Brighton.  Her heart begins to heal and love again.  Its truly captivating and somewhat magical to read about how strong people can be and how time really does help to heal pain.

Perry has written a beautiful and engaging story that is unputdownable and unforgettable. This is one book I would happily recommend to anyone and everyone looking for the next great read - you will LOVE this book to bits!!
