Deer Season by Erin Flanagan

(Thank you to the publisher and TLC Book Tours for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

It’s the opening weekend of deer season in Gunthrum, Nebraska, in 1985, and Alma Costagan’s intellectually disabled farmhand, Hal Bullard, has gone hunting with some of the locals, leaving her in a huff. That same weekend, a teenage girl goes missing, and Hal returns with a flimsy story about the blood in his truck and a dent near the headlight. When the situation escalates from that of a missing girl to something more sinister, Alma and her husband are forced to confront what Hal might be capable of, as rumors fly and townspeople see Hal’s violent past in a new light.

A drama about the complicated relationships connecting the residents of a small-town farming community, Deer Season explores troubling questions about how far people will go to safeguard the ones they love and what it means to be a family.

my thoughts:

Wow! What a thought-provoking story. Deer Season by Erin Flanagan is superb. The writing is top notch, the characters are flawed and interesting to read about, and the story is intriguing and compelling. I just loved this book to bits! Who knew a book about deer hunting season would be so great?!

It's 1985 in Gunthrum, Nebraska and deer season has just kicked off. People are stoked to go hunting. Alma's farmhand, Hal, is one of those people who has gone off to hunt.  It's just another day in a small town.  Except, suddenly news of a missing teenaged girl starts to spread. Oh, and Hal's truck has blood on it, along with a dent.  Hmm...seems like maybe the two things are linked, or not? Only, now the girl is not only missing, but something bad may have happened to her. Is Hal to blame? The town seems to think so, especially considering Hal's violent past. There are some people who come to Hal's defense, like Alma and her husband. And yet, even they begin to wonder about Hal. Yikes! Makes you wonder who you can really trust.

Flanagan has written a character-driven story that is slow-going, but chock full of drama. You can't help but get caught up in this small-town with its quirky residents and traditional pastimes. It's such a fascinating mystery to fall in deep with. I absolutely LOVED it!

I would happily recommend Deer Season by Erin Flanagan to fans of her work and to anyone looking for their next great read - you are not going to want to miss out on this one!
