Favorite Reads in 2010

In 2010 I read several good books, but only a few actually stood out as memorable reads and they are:

Bram Stoker's, Dracula

Ninni Holmqvist's, The Unit

Markus Zusak's, The Book Thief

and Audrey Niffengger's, Her Fearful Symmetry.

As for what this new reading year will bring, well, truth be told, I'm not so sure.  All I know is that I want to read whatever catches my fancy and try new genres. Basically, I want to have a fun reading year. And that is what I wish for everyone - a fantastic reading year filled with lots and lots of good reads. Cheers!

I haven't read Her Fearful Symmetry, but I totally agree with the other three! Happy 2011!

Happy 2011 to you! And thanks, Dracula and The Unit were awesome reads that I truly enjoyed. Hope you get a chance to read HFS sometime soon. Cheers!

I love Dracula! I read it a few semesters ago and thought that it was great, despite the enormous paper I had to write on it!
I haven't read the other two though.

Nadia, I loved the Book Thief, and Her Fearful Symmetry was quite good and rather interesting too.

I have no plans for my reading either. I just want to read whatever I am in the mood to read.

Happy New Year!

I really liked The Unit, but haven't read any of the others you've listed. The Book Thief is in the book case next to my desk, so hopefully, I'll read it one day.

Yay! So glad to see that Dracula made the list!!

Of your list, I've only read The Book Thief. I'll be bumping the others up on my to-read list since you (and those who commented) insist they're good. Thanks for sharing your picks!

S.Leighanne - Dracula rocks! So glad you loved it, too! How did that paper turn out?

Brenda, Happy New Year!! Those are two amazing books - loved them! And I think its great to just read whatever strikes your mood - it will make for a more enjoyable reading experience.

bermudaonion, The Unit was such a good read - I must admit it haunts me still. I hope you do get to The Book Thief sometime soon - it is a worthwhile read.

Coffee and a Book Chic, Thanks!

Katie, thanks! I know you will enjoy those books. Enjoy!!

Boy did we differ on Her Fearful Symmetry! I was looking for The Unit for my son's girlfriend for Christmas but couldn't remember the author's name. I must get to The Book Thief one of these days!

Lisa, I know! That is the great thing about books - there are so many different opinions, that it makes for such great discussion. Definitely get to The Book Thief when you get a chance - it is sooo good! And she will enjoy reading The Unit - what a great gift idea!

Loved The Unit and I usually try to stay away from dystopian fiction. I was really hesitant about starting it and then could not put it down. Think it resonates with bookish types for a number of reasons including those that find themselves there being creatively similar to book lovers.

Frances, I'm not a huge fan of dystopian fiction either, but for some reason this book truly captured my attention. I just connected with certain aspects of the book and found myself thinking about it months after I'd put it down. I do agree with you that it does seem to resonate with bookish types for a number of reasons. Definitely a good read!

I've still got The Unit and Dracula on my TBR. I loved Her Fearful Symmetry as well! Great list and happy reading in 2011 :)

Brenna, Thanks! I'm so glad to see I wasn't the only one who liked HFS. As far as The Unit and Dracula go, I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Happy reading to you!!

Thanks for reminding me of The Unit, which I've wanted to read for a long time; that also goes for Her Fearful Symmetry. Which I even own...argh! I love how you just put the few best, instead of 9,000. Which is hard to find anyway. :)

Bellezza, thanks! I was getting a bit tired of all those top ten lists and figured I'd just put the few books that truly captivated me last year. As for The Unit and HFS - you will truly enjoy them! By the by, I'm the same way about owning all these books that just sit unread on my shelf - I have yet to read Wolf Hall and it just sits there staring at me. LOL!

I loved The Book Thief also, one of my favorites of 2009. And I love that edition of Dracula -- is that the one you read, with the Gorey illustrations? I gave that one to Amanda from The Zen Leaf last Christmas!

Nadia said...

Karen - yes, that is the one I read. I loved those illustrations - they were terrific!

The Unit was my favorite read in 2010 too! Loved Dracula but read it back in college. Have The Book Thief on the shelf over there. Hope to get to it in 2011!
