Currently reading...

I just received my copy of Ronald Malfi's latest novel, The Hive. Woo hoo! I'm so excited. I'm a fan of Malfi's horror stories and have been looking forward to diving into this book for months.

The book is about a small town called Mariner's Cove and the people who live there. There's been a horrible storm. And now, the town is cleaning up. Except, there are random objects scattered about and these items are calling out to people. Seems like there is something for everyone. And soon, the townsfolk of Mariner's Cove are obsessing over these objects and they are determined to protect these things, no matter what. Oh, and there's a kid, who's been exhibiting strange behavior that almost looks like some sort of power. Hmm...seems like Mariner's Cove is not exactly what it seems, eh? And, I am thrilled to read all about it. Especially, since the story is giving me Needful Things vibes - I love that Stephen King book!

Alright, well, I'm off to dip into this book on my lunch break. Hope you are reading something great, too! Happy reading!

Death Wasn't Invited: A June's Journey Mystery by Carlene O'Connor

(Thank you to Titan Books for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book: (summary from Goodreads)

Based on the hit mobile game, a cozy murder mystery set in 1920s Paris by a USA Today bestselling author, perfect for fans of Richard Osman and Agatha Christie. June's friend has been brutally murdered and the police have the wrong man, can she solve the case before the killer catches up to her?

Paris, 1922. The marriage between the Auclair and the Picard family is the talk of the town. June can't wait to attend the engagement party with her friends, Nate and Jack. But Nate has an ulterior motive, he's there to stop the wedding. Before he can complete his task, he's stabbed in the chest, with Jack's knife. Jack is arrested, but June knows he wouldn't hurt a fly.

In this throwback to the classic whodunnits of Agatha Christie, June must find the real killer and clear Jack's name. As she becomes embroiled deeper and deeper into a corrupt web of Parisian old-money, high society and politics, she uncovers deadly secrets. Can June solve the case before the killer strikes again?

my thoughts:

How fun does this book sound? First off, I love the June's Journey Mystery games - they are a favorite of mine. Also, I love the idea of a book based on the game - it's the perfect whodunit mystery! Familiar characters, a murder mystery, and Paris - what more could I want?

I was thrilled to get my hands on a copy of Death Wasn't Invited: A June's Journey Mystery by Carlene O'Connor and immediately started reading. Soon I was transported to Paris in 1922 and alongside June as she attended an engagement party with her friends, Jack and Nate. Except, things go from good to bad in two shake's of a lamb's tail. Yep, June's friend Nate is murdered and the culprit arrested for the crime is her other friend, Jack. Say what? Turns out it was his knife. Yikes! So, now June is rushing to find out what really happened and who is truly responsible for this crime. The only thing is that the more she discover, the deadlier things are becoming. And, that is all I will share about this fun and exciting mystery.

Make sure to grab a copy and settle in with a cuppa - you are going to LOVE this book to bits. Happy reading!

Entwined: The Entwined Duology by H. M. Long

(Thank you to Titan Books for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book: (summary from Goodreads)

Three sisters join the hunt for a stolen magical artefact in the start of this Gilded Age fantasy duology.

Ottilie Rushforth hides from the mighty Sorcerer’s Guild as secretary to a has-been detective. She is Entwined – threads of magic run beneath her skin, and the Guild would trap her in service.

But Ottilie has a plan to escape the Guild forever with her estranged fiancé, the enigmatic poet, soldier and smuggler Lewis Illing. All she must do is track down a mysterious artefact, claim the bounty, and leave the city forever. But Ottilie's sisters – Pretoria, a quick-witted sorceress and thief recently emerged from exile, and Madge, a guild mage to the core, appear to make equally unwelcome offers. A new life at the cost of everything she has ever wanted, or prestige and safety in a gilded cage.

With her life on the line, Ottilie must track down the artifact in a city torn apart by prejudice and violence, and choose between the two sides of herself – the fugitive and the Entwined.

my thoughts:

Love, love, loved this first book in H. M. Long's new duology, Entwined. Sisters. Magic. Artefacts. Romance. And, fantasy. How awesome does that all sound? Especially, when family drama is at the core. Yep, three sisters that are not all on the same page at all. Ottillie is entwined and she wants out. She wants to find a magical artefact and cash in on the bounty, then she can peace out with her fiancé. Except, her sisters, Pretoria and Madge, have plans of their own and let's just say they can definitely complicate matters for Ottillie. Yikes! And, that is all I will share about this exciting new story. It's a definite must-read and one I would happily recommend to anyone and everyone looking for their next great read. You are going to fall in deep with Ottillie and the Guild. Plus, there is a still a second book to come that you just know is going to fill in all the blanks in a thrilling and fun new story. I can't wait!

Jekyll & Hyde: Winter Retreat, Consulting Detectives #2 by Tim Major

(Thank you to Titan Books for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book: (summary from Goodreads)

The Jekyll & Hyde detective agency must solve a locked-room mystery in this festive installment of the series. A tribute to classic Golden Age crime novels which is perfect for fans of Stuart Turton and Lucy Foley.

Henry Jekyll and Muriel Carew infiltrate a Christmas artists’ retreat to investigate a series of death threats. Though the country manor is filled with festive cheer, stage rehearsals and jolly games, its colourful guests harbour dark secrets. Henry’s transformations into the brutish Edward Hyde are more frequent than ever, and Edward is as likely to create new problems as he is to aid the investigation. When a murder is committed onstage, heavy snow prevents the arrival of the police… which means that only the Jekyll & Hyde detective agency can solve the case.

my thoughts:

Love, love, loved Winter Retreat! It's the second book in Tim Major's series, Jekyll & Hyde, Consulting Detectives and it is fantastic! In fact, I think it's even better than the first book. The writing is top notch, the characters are unforgettable, and the story itself is unputdownable. A country manor, an artist's retreat, heavy snow, and murder make for quite the whodunit mystery. Throw in an unlikely trio tasked with solving the case and you have an excellent crime novel to snuggle up with. I know I enjoyed settling down with my copy of the book and a huge cuppa on a chilly morning - it made for the perfect start to my Sunday.

And, the story is captivating right from the start and just so fun to get caught up in. I mean it, this series is a delight. I don't want to share anymore about it, because I want you to check it out for yourselves. It is a must-read and I just know you will fall in deep. Make sure to check it out!

The Ghosts of Merry Hall by Heather Davey

(Thank you Titan Books for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book: (summary from Goodreads)

A chilling ghost story in which a mother and daughter move into a crumbling house haunted by the ghost of a girl who performed in Victorian freak shows, through which wind whistles eerily, floorboards creak ominously and things go bump in the night.

It's Laura Purcell's The Silent Companions meets Alice Hoffman's The Museum of Extraordinary Things.

In the present day, following the break-up of a controlling marriage, single mother Nell moves into the crumbling Victorian Merry Hall with her teenage daughter, Fern. She's determined to make a new life but the noises, moving objects, and strange smells in her new home make her increasingly unsettled.

In the 1840s, showman Abel Wenham seduces Dolly, a talented albino girl and makes her the star of his performing collection of 'freaks'. But after she becomes pregnant with his child, he discards her and imprisons her at Merry Hall, where her only solace is the company of fellow performers Ada the Bear Lady and the Jack the Posturer. They plan to escape with Dolly and her child and set up in business, but Wenham has other ideas.

When Fern admits she, too, is pregnant, it seems as though history may be about to repeat itself. But is Dolly, just one of the ghosts that haunt Merry Hall, reaching out across the centuries to protect her own child?

Told in alternating chapters across two timelines – one in the mid-19th century, one in the present day – this page-turning gothic chiller is ideal for those who love The Whistling by Rebecca Netley, The Whispering Muse by Laura Purcell and The Wayward Girls by Amanda Mason.

My thoughts:

I love the book's cover - talk about holiday horror vibes, which are perfect for a spooky read during the fall season. And, of course, I love the sound of the story - a crumbling Victorian that has "creepy" emanating from the walls. Within the house we get two stories told in dual timelines - Dolly, a ghost who was forced to live at Merry Hall in the 1840s; and in the present day, Nell, recently divorced and trying to figure out her next steps, so that she can take care of herself and her teenaged daughter, Fern. This unlikely trio find themselves unraveling mysteries, battling an evil ghost, and searching for answers in the unlikeliest of places. All the while living in a haunted house. Talk about being ghosted!

Suffice it to say, I really enjoyed spending time with Nell and Dolly. The Ghosts of Merry Hall is a fantastic ghost story! Atmospheric and entertaining, it makes for quite a thrilling read. I would happily recommend this book to anyone and everyone. You are going to enjoy this haunted house thriller to bits! Make sure to grab a copy!

Frankenstein's Monster by J. S. Barnes

(Thank you to Titan Books for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

“He was soon borne away by the waves, and lost in darkness and distance.”

There are those who would swear that Victor Frankenstein is dead. Those who would swear that his Creature died also.

They are wrong.

  1. Folklorist Nathaniel Greene escapes to the country to finish his latest book, along with his wife, Alice. Yearning for a family, and yet finding herself without, Alice watches as Greene grows ever more distant with her, fraying their already tense bonds. When a mysterious stranger arrives on their doorstep, bedraggled and delirious, Alice welcomes him in, finding herself seduced by the promises he makes.

  2. In Newgate prison, Nathaniel Greene stands accused of murder. Philanthropist Jesse Malone and psychic Hubert Crowe are determined to understand what happened, but the story Greene has to tell is almost unbelievable: one of monstrous, impossible creations made in an outhouse laboratory.

To uncover the truth behind Greene’s bizarre claims, the two investigators must delve into a terrifying world where the men play God once more, and the ghosts of the past appear to be alive and vengeful.

In this visionary sequel to Mary Shelley’s peerless classic, old experiments resume, new mysteries arise, and the true question of mankind’s morality is tested once more.

my thoughts:

A sequel to Frankenstein! How awesome does that sound? The idea that Victor and his monster still live - I mean, that is definitely the way to Frankenstein fans' hearts. Plus, it's always fun to read someone else's reimagining of a story, well, at least when it's done right. And let me just say, J. S. Barnes has written a terrific Gothic tale with his sequel, Frankenstein's Monster. I absolutely loved it!

Barnes' story is dark and moody, suspenseful, a bit creepy, and chock full of fantastic storytelling. He carries on from the original book that inspired him seamlessly.  I really enjoyed how he was able to take such a beloved classic and make it his own. He writes with enthusiasm and transports his reader to a world with new and old characters that make this horror story unputdownable. You can't help but get caught up in the dual timelines, letters, and questions about humanity. This book is a literary treat! I would happily recommend it to anyone and everyone looking for their next great read. Of course, I would definitely recommend it to fans of Frankenstein - you won't want to miss out on this must-read sequel. Make sure to grab a copy ASAP.

Happy reading!

Future's Edge by Gareth L. Powell

(Thank you Titan Books for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

From the award-winning author of Embers of War comes a fast-paced and heartfelt adventure of space piracy, deadly alien artifacts and a race to save what is left of humanity, perfect for fans of James S.A. Corey and Becky Chambers

When archaeologist Ursula Morrow accidentally infects herself with an alien parasite, she fears she may have jeopardised her career. However, her concerns become irrelevant when Earth is destroyed, billions die, and suddenly no one needs archaeologists anymore…

Two years later, she’s plucked from a refugee camp on a backwater world and tasked with retrieving the artefact that infected her, as it just might hold the key to humanity’s survival. With time running short, and the planet housing the weapon now situated in hostile territory, she realises she’s going to have to commit an act of desperate piracy if she’s going to achieve her objective before the enemy’s final onslaught.

my thoughts:

Wow! Science fiction with a blend of humor and horror - what more could I ask for? I absolutely LOVED Future's Edge by Gareth L. Powell! What an awesome book!

We have an archaeologist, aliens, adventure, thrills, and hopefulness jam-packed in this exciting story about humanity's survival. How cool does that sound, right? I know I loved every second I spent with this novel - it was just such a fascinating and fun story to get lost in. Basically we are two years out after the world has ended - meaning that humanity was wiped out, with the exception of a few remaining survivors. These survivors have managed to eke out an existence of sorts on other planets that have become refugee camps. Ursula's boyfriend, Jack,  was able to get her to one of these camps, but he didn't go with her. He decided to continue fighting the Cutters. Oh, that's right, I forgot to mention the Cutters - the aliens responsible for attacking Earth and decimating the population. Except, now it seems that the tides may be turning in the humans favor - Jack has come back and he has an idea of a weapon they could use to fight the Cutters and he needs Ursula's help. Say what?! She's just seen him after two years of no contact and now he wants her to go on a dangerous mission with him!?! Well, let the adventure begin! After all, the human population may be tiny, but their hope is unyielding. And, that is all I will share about this thrilling story. You must read it for yourself to find out what happens to Ursula and Jack. Make sure to grab a copy!

And now, I'm off to find more of Gareth L. Powell's books to read.

The Crimson Road by A. G. Slatter

(Thank you to Titan Books for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

A captivating dark gothic fantasy set in the same universe as the award-winning author's All The Murmuring Bones, The Path of Thorns and The Briar Book of the Dead. A tale of vampires, assassins, ancient witches and broken promises.

Violet Zennor has had a peculiar upbringing. Training as a fighter in underground arenas, honing her skills against the worst scum, murderers and thieves her father could pit her against, she has learned to be ruthless. To kill.

Until the day Hedrek Zennor dies. Violet thinks she’s free – a rich young heiress with a world of possibilities in front of her. Then, to her horror, Violet learns that her father planned to send her into the Darklands, where the Leech Lords reign. Where Violet’s still-born brother was taken years ago after Hedrek sold him to a man bearing the mark of the mysterious Anchorhold.

Her father’s solicitor and the city’s bishop are insistent she fulfil her duty, but Violet steadfastly refuses. Until one night two assassins attempt to slaughter her – and it becomes if she wants to enjoy a future free of the interference of either solicitors, bishops or assassins, she’s going to have to clean up the mess her father made.

On her journey, Violet seeks the help of Miren O’Malley in the hidden estate of Blackwater, whose family once produced the purest, strangest silver; Ellie Briar of Silverton, the Briar Witch who guards the gateway to the realm of the Leech Lords; and Asher Todd of Whitebarrow, who did terrible things and found The Three Who Went Beneath.

Ultimately, Violet must go alone. Into the Darklands. To the Anchorhold where it all began. Where it will all end. To do what must be done.

By turns gripping and bewitching, sharp and audacious, this mesmerising story takes you on a journey into the dark heart of Slatter's sinister and compelling fantasy world, where blood is currency and magic is a weapon.

my thoughts:

The Crimson Road by A. G. Slatter is my first foray into her popular Sourdough Universe - people rave about this collection, along with her other books. When it comes to fantasy, Slatter is a defiinite must-read. So, of course I was thrilled to get my hands on a copy of this book - how could I not be thrilled, right? It's chock full of magic, Leech Lords, witches, and so much more. What's not to like? Suffice it to say, I dove right in and could not stop reading. The book was just too much fun and way too good to put down for anything. Talk about a delicious read!

Violet Zennor knows how to fight. I mean it. She can defend herself and even kill if her hand is forced. Why? Her dad. He made sure that his daughter was trained to kill. The only thing is, the two don't exactly have the best relationship. So, when he passes away, Violet feels like she is finally free to live her life her own way. Except, that's not going to be the case. Yep, looks like her dad has left her one last mission and it's going to take everything she has within her to win. Yikes!

And that is all I will share about this awesome story. Just know that it is thrilling, exciting, fantastical, and so much fun. You are going to LOVE it to bits! Plus, you'll be inspired to read the rest of the Sourdough Universe collection - I know that I'm excited to read those books. So, make sure to get your hands on a copy of The Crimson Road ASAP - you won't want to miss out on this terrific book!

A Christmas Ghost Story: A Chilling Tale for Dark Days and Long Nights by Kim Newman

(Thank you to Titan Books for providing me with a copy of this book!)

I just received this novella, A Christmas Ghost Story by Kim Newman, and I'm eager to read it. I love the title and I love the cover. It's the perfect story for this Halloween season. So, what is the story about? Well, according to the blurb I read:

From the acclaimed author of Anno Dracula, the perfect gift for those who love the dark fantastic imaginations of Neil Gaiman and T. Kingfisher, this is a nightmarish tale of a haunted Christmas set deep in the British countryside not too long ago. Cosy traditions are made twisted and terrifying as a mother and son grapple with their painful past.

Lynda and her teenage son Rust prepare for Christmas, hanging fairy lights and making decorations. The first door of the advent calendar is opened, but the chocolate inside tastes off. Rust receives his first Christmas card, it's unsigned and the message is aggressive rather than festive.

The cards keep coming, one each day and each more sinister than the last, and a frightened Lynda recalls a seasonal TV show from her childhood that featured similar happenings, and while she remembers it vividly, there is no evidence that it was ever broadcast…

As their Christmas cheer is gradually poisoned, with real dead robins replacing plastic ones, the turkey rotting in the freezer and Rust becoming increasingly unwell, Lynda begins to wonder if her childhood Christmases were in fact as joy filled as she remembers…

A terrifying tale of seasonal dread from a master of horror.

Whoa! How creepy does that sound? How is a TV show only Lynda remembers coming true? Who is sending those cards? Why is her son getting sick? Who is determined to scare them to death? What is happening? Yikes! Okay, this sounds like a fun one. And, I can't wait to read it! I'm going to need a cuppa,  a cozy reading spot, and my copy of A Christmas Ghost Story this weekend. Talk about perfect reading plans.

And now, I'm off to tackle some more books on my TBR list. Hope you are all having a wonderful week. Happy reading!

Death Comes At Christmas edited by Marie O'Regan and Paul Kane

(Thank you to Titan Books for providing me with a copy of this book!)

I love anthologies. They are always such fun to read. Eighteen authors all writing about the same topic, but in such different ways - who wouldn't love that? Am I right? So, of course I was excited to get my hands on a copy of this lovely, Death Comes At Christmas edited by Marie O'Regan and Paul Kane. I mean, c'mon, it has Christmas in the title and the theme is murder-mysteries. How could I resist? My favorite holiday and my new favorite genre - Hurrah!  So, I grabbed a huge cuppa and settled in for a long night with my new favorite book. And let me just say, what a treat it was!

I really enjoyed reading stories by some of my favorites (C. L. Taylor, Claire McGowan, J. T. Ellison) and reading stories by new-to-me writers (Belinda Bauer, Angela Clarke, Tina Baker) - talk about a fun a festive mix. There were locked-room mysteries, cozy mysteries, and some dark and twisty stories - all of which made for an exciting and thrilling reading experience. I would happily recommend Death Comes At Christmas to fans of murder mysteries and anyone looking for their next great read - you are going to LOVE this book to bits! Make sure to grab a copy ASAP. Or gift a copy to your favorite bibliophile. Either way, make sure to check this book out.

The Hollow And The Haunted by Camilla Raines

(Thank you to Titan Books for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

In this darkly magical, romantic YA fantasy debut, a closeted teenage psychic in small-town Washington foresees the death of his sworn enemy, and is forced to work with him to save his life. Sparks fly, but the dead are restless, and some ghosts don't want to stay buried...

Perfect for fans of The Raven Cycle, Cemetery Boys and Sixteen Souls.

Sixteen-year-old Miles Warren hails from a long line of psychics. Resigned to a life in the (not especially profitable) family business, Miles is perfectly happy, thank you very much―except for the part where he's constantly exhausted from long nights digging up graves, hiding his sexuality from his family, and unable to fulfil his dream of going to art school one day. Perfectly happy.

But Miles' comfortable routine is interrupted when has a premonition of a violent supernatural murder. He soon discovers that the victim is none other than Gabriel Hawthorne, whose family have a mysterious, decades-long feud with Miles' own. Gabriel is everything Miles expects from a Hawthorne―rude, snobbish, and irritatingly good-looking―but Miles isn't just going to stand by and let someone murder him. The two form an uneasy alliance, trying to solve Gabriel's murder and prevent it from taking place.

The odds are against them; death premonitions are notoriously hard to alter. As they uncover secrets about their families' feud and dark magic swirls around the pair, Miles is horrified to realize that he doesn't hate Gabriel as much as he's supposed to. He might even like him.

Too bad Gabriel is almost certainly going to die.

my thoughts:

Wow! What a fantastic story! I loved Camilla Raines novel, The Hollow And The Haunted - it was such a fun treat to read.

Miles and Gabriel aren't friends. In fact, their families are feuding. And yet, they have agreed to work together to solve a murder...Gabriel's murder. Yep, turns out that Miles is psychic and he's had a premonition of Gabriel's impending violent death. Yikes! So, the two have joined forced to find out how they can prevent Gabriel from dying. The only thing is that stopping death isn't easy. Oh, and the more they work together, the more they find out about their families' decades long feud, which definitely leads to secret up on secret being revealed. Plus, the more time that Miles spends with Gabriel, he starts to seem him a new light...a romantic one. And, that is all I will share. Well, except for the fact that there will be a second book - hurrah!

Raines has written a terrific story. There's family drama, love, secrets, magic, and so much more - you will fall in deep with this unforgettable cast of characters.  And the story is captivating - you will be caught up in it right from the start. The Hollow And The Haunted is a must-read for everyone looking for their next supernatural YA story - make sure to grab a copy ASAP!
