When a giant nor’easter dumps a blanket of snow on the village of Dunwich, Massachussetts, Robert Arthur and his friends find themselves marooned inside Lovecraft Middle School. The kids have no choice but to spend the night—while snacking on cafeteria food, sleeping on classroom floors, and facing off against a mysterious substitute teacher who may have a sinister secret.
The latest adventure in the Lovecraft Middle School series features more adventures, more outrageous monsters, and another terrifying lenticular cover!
my thoughts:
Is it just me or are the Lovecraft books getting even more awesome? Because I think that out of all four books in the series that Substitute Creature takes the cake. Seriously, it is FANTASTIC!! I loved the idea of a sudden snowstorm trapping Robert Arthur and his friends at school. Talk about the perfect scenario for drama and danger! Plus, its Valentine's Day and young love is brewing, along with the latest addition to the Lovecraft Middle School faculty room - the Substitute Creature (oops, I meant Teacher). Let's just say that the new sub isn't exactly who she says she is, and she's not alone. Yep, there are these horrible little furry beasts to contend with or else no one will survive the night at Lovecraft Middle School! I swear that the little fur balls reminded me of that movie Critters (the 80s flick about critters from outer space) and it also had me thinking about Furbies (which I find to be disturbing toys - especially after reading Brett Easton Ellis' Lunar Park). Basically, its a danger zone at Lovecraft Middle School and its all up to Robert Arthur to save the night - talk about stress!!
Now, I'm not going to tell you what happens, because that would be crazy. Especially since I know you want to read all about it for yourself. After all, who doesn't love the Lovecraft Middle School series? What I will tell you is that the writing is terrific (like always), the characters are amazing (I swear they are like old friends to me by now), and the dramas are action-packed and outrageous (just how I like them). This is a series that is worth getting invested in - believe me, you will love getting to know Robert Arthur and his friends.
And now I'm off to read something from the towering pile of books next to my desk. Happy reading!!

This book equals me having completed R.I.P. VIII - Woo hoo! I did it! I can't believe how quickly I finished the challenge and I hadn't even intended to. Seems like I have a predilection for spooky reads lately. Of course, a few of them weren't that scary - they were more fun and less bite. Either way, I do have a few more creepy reads coming up, so I guess I'm not really done with R.I.P. VIII just yet. Plus, I still need to watch a scary movie or two to complete the Peril the Screen portion of the challenge. I'm thinking that the new Carrie remake will be the perfect film to watch for R.I.P. VIII - what do you think?
