Twenty years ago, six Penn students shared a house, naively certain that their friendships would endure—until the death of their ringleader and dear friend Bea splintered the group for good. Now, mostly estranged from one another, the remaining five reluctantly gather at that same house on the eve of what would have been Bea’s fortieth birthday.
But along with the return of the friends come old grudges, unrequited feelings, and buried secrets. Catherine, the CEO of a domestic empire, and Owen, a stay-at-home dad, were picture-perfect college sweethearts—but now teeter on the brink of disaster. Lindy, a well-known musician, is pushing middle age in an industry that’s all about youth and slowly self-destructing as she grapples with her own identity. Behind his smile, handsome plastic surgeon Colin harbors the heartbreaking truth about his own history with Bea. And Annie carefully curates her life on Instagram and Facebook, keeping up appearances so she doesn’t have to face the truth about her own empty reality.
Reunited in the place where so many dreams began, and bolstered by the hope of healing, each of them is forced to confront the past.
my thoughts:
Talk about the perfect summer beach read. I absolutely loved In Twenty Years by Allison Winn Scotch. The story was entertaining, relatable, and unputdownable. The characters were flawed and struggling to figure out their lives. And the idea of a reunion bringing this group together was terrific - it added a great blend of nostalgic moments within the present day realities plaguing them all.
In Twenty Years is the story of six friends who all shared a house in college. They were as close as could be - living in each others' pockets day in and day out. Fast forward twenty years and none of them have really stayed in touch, except for Catherine and Owen would married each other. Anyhow, Bea, the ringleader of the group (aka the glue that held them together) has died. She's contacted each of her old friends via her attorney and requested they all reunite at the old house they used to share (apparently she bought it years ago). Reluctantly, they all agree to attend this impromptu reunion - for the sake of Bea. Of course, once they are all together, old secrets and betrayals get revealed. Friendships are tested. And lives are changed. Its drama with a capital D.
Told via multiple perspectives, we are provided with inside looks at each character's current life and their take on the past. We also get to find out more about what happened to fracture this tight-knit group. And we find out just how strong their friendships really are. Allison Winn Scotch has written a reunion story that covers all the bases: friendship, love, loss, and growing up. She captures the depths of friendships perfectly. I just loved getting to know this group and finding out what happened to them all. In Twenty Years is a story you won't want to miss!
