Nonfiction in the New Year...

I'm taking a cue from The Bibliophile Belle and will be reading at least one nonfiction book a month in 2016.  Pretty nifty resolution, eh?  Not only do I enjoy nonfiction (when I actually read it), but I think its high time to read more of it.  Luckily for me, I already own quite a few nonfiction books - so I won't be breaking my resolution of reading my own damn books.  Hurrah!  In fact, I'm actually off to a good start already. I just finished reading this book earlier this week:
and am currently reading this:
Not bad, eh?  And here are some of the nonfiction books I own that I'll be choosing from:

I think I have a pretty good selection to choose from, so I'm pretty excited about this new resolution of mine - one nonfiction book a month.  Truthfully, the way I'm reading lately, I'll probably wind up reading more than one nonfiction book a month. We'll just see how it goes.  Of course, I haven't mentioned the books that I don't own that I want to read for this nonfiction addiction I'm developing.  Here are those books:

Another good mix of books, eh?  I have fluff mixed in with self-journey/self-help and history and so much more.  There are just so many great books out there lately, its hard not to want all the pretties.  Ack!  Oh well, I will stick to my own books as best I can.  I am only human though, so a purchase or three may happen during the year - I'm thinking the Bronte books, the new Roxane Gay, and the Lauren Conrad (my sis and I are throwing our dad a party next year, so the Conrad will come in handy) are must haves.  What do you think?  Have you read any of these?  Which do you recommend (preferably from my own collection and not the ones I want to buy)?

Well, I'm off to finish reading the Cisneros.  That book is speaking to my heart and soul in so many ways - its beyond. I am just crushing so hard on it. I am in love with this book. Hope you are enjoying a great read as well.  Happy reading!!

So many great books! I gobbled down The Year of Magical Thinking in one sitting, and I loved #GIRLBOSS. I can't wait to read Lahiri's new book. :D

Andi, there are too many great books! I remember your post on #GIRLBOSS, which is why I want to read it :) I'm definitely thinking of finally reading Didion. And as for Lahiri - anything she writes is must-read material to me. Let me know what you think of her new book!

I admire you for setting a goal like this. I have always disliked nonfiction and found it boring - I wish I was more like you and enjoyed it! I can read a funny memoir, but that's about it for me. I hope someday the urge will strike like it did when I tried historical fiction!

Enjoy - I hope you love all the books on your list!

Brandie, thanks. I didn't care much for nonfiction at first either, but lately I'm getting into more and more. I think it helps that the books are by people like Tina Fey or Mindy Kaling - makes the books more fun. So, I'm definitely with you on the funny memoir part :) I'm sure the urge will strike at some point. I feel like the older I get, the more open I am to other genres now - I never would have been a fan of the cozy mystery or suspense-thrillers before and now I can't stop reading them. And thanks - I hope I love all those books, too :)

Radioactive is so good. I really want to read It's What I Do as well.

Kathy, that's good to know about Radioactive. I read about it in a magazine and it sounded interesting. I'm excited to read it. I heard about It's What I Do on a morning show and have wanted to read it ever since. So many good books!

I love Sandra Cisneros, and the cover on her newest is so compelling. I even want her jeans!

I've loved A Moveable Feast, Underground and want to read The Year of Magical Thinking as well. I bought it, assuming I would face such loss in my life, and I've not yet read it because dealing with death of loved ones is so heavy. But, unavoidable, and I'm sure Didion would have important insight.

Looking forward to Jane Eyre with you! Even if I don't finish it in January, I'll at least have begun it again. ;)

A Moveable Feast was nice. Made me want to move to Paris (sigh).
I would very much like to read Joan Didion. Maybe your reviews will inspire me.
Big Magic was the last book I read in 2015. Really liked it, many good things to take away from there. There's also an interview with Elizabeth Gilbert on YouTube about the book, it's about an hour long but worth watching.

The Charlotte Bronte bio was highly enjoyable. That Jean Rhys bio looks pretty tempting to. Are you reading The Wide Sargasso Sea with Jane Eyre?

M, me too! She is one of my favorite authors and I just love how cool she looks on her book's cover!

I'm looking forward to the Hemingway and Murakami, because I'm positive I will love them, too :) I need to read Didion and think 2016 is the year to finally do it. You are so right about facing loss - it is much too heavy to deal with and unavoidable at the same time. Sometimes the right book can capture what you feel with words so accurately its beyond anything - I'm thinking Didion's words will do that.

I can't wait until JE with you! :)

Delia, anything with Paris and I'm in. I love that it makes you want to move there :) I know what you mean, I've been wanting to read Didion for quite some time and I've just decided its finally time. Hope my reviews tempt you to pick up her books. I'm so glad you enjoyed Big Magic. I've been on the fence about it, but am still interested in reading int. Sounds like I will definitely enjoy it. Thanks for the tip on her interview on You Tube! Cheers!!

Frances, that's great to know about the CB bio - I'm really looking forward to it. I've had that Jean Rhys bio for ages and have decided its finally time to read it. I do love her writing, so I definitely want to learn more about her. Its funny you mention reading WSS with JE, because I was thinking about it. Perhaps, I should.

oh my goodness, oh my goodness...I am beyond excited you're joining me in this. I'm also already panicking because I realized that I want to read lots of the ones you suggested too. Why can't pausing time to allow for adequate reading time be a thing?

Had NO idea Haruki Murakami had written a non-fiction book?!

It's going to be a great year!

The Bibliophile Belle, thanks for inspiring me to read more nonfiction! I'm so excited for this! And, I know what you mean - reading your list made me want to read so many more books :) Why can't we pause time so that we can read at leisure - LOL!

Yes, Murakami has a nonfiction and I have to read it!! I hear it so good, too. Of course, it is Murakami, so I figured it would be good - LOL!

It is definitely going to be a great year!! Cheers!!

I just finished my 2nd nonfiction of the year and I'm pretty stoked about that start. So many great nonfiction reads to choose from. I'm really wanting to read Notorious RBG! And The Year Of Magical Thinking is such a great book about grief!

Nadia said...

Lisa, that's awesome! You are so right - there are so many great nonfiction books out there lately - too many to choose from :) The RBG book looks like it will be a fun read and I've been wanting to read Didion for years - sounds like it will be a worthwhile read.

I enjoy a nice blend of non fiction and fiction and recently read "when Breath Becomes Air" and a memoir by Joyce Maynard. I enjoyed both an awful lot.

I didn't realize Murakami had another NF called Underground. I'm familiar with his NF about "running".
