The Sisters of Sea View: On Devonshire Shores #1 by Julie Klassen

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

Some guests have come for a holiday, others for hidden reasons of their own . . .

When their father's death leaves them impoverished, Sarah Summers and her genteel sisters fear they will be forced to sell the house and separate to earn livelihoods as governesses or companions. Determined to stay together, Sarah convinces them to open their seaside home to guests to make ends meet and provide for their ailing mother. Instead of the elderly invalids they expect to receive, however, they find themselves hosting eligible gentlemen. Sarah is soon torn between a growing attraction to a mysterious Scottish widower and duty to her family.

Viola Summers wears a veil to cover her scar. When forced to choose between helping in her family's new guest house and earning money to hire a maid to do her share, she chooses the latter. She reluctantly agrees to read to some of Sidmouth's many invalids, preferring the company of a few elders with failing eyesight to the fashionable guests staying in their home. But when her first client turns out to be a wounded officer in his thirties, Viola soon wishes she had chosen differently. Her new situation exposes her scars--both visible and those hidden deep within--and her cloistered heart will never be the same.

Join the Summers sisters on the Devonshire coast, where they discover the power of friendship, loyalty, love, and new beginnings.

my thoughts:

What a charming and entertaining story! I just loved Julie Klassen's latest book, The Sisters of Sea View - it's the first in her new series, On Devonshire Shores. And let me just say, it is excellent!

Sarah Summers' father has just passed away and now her family is in desperate need of money. So, she comes up with the idea of letting out rooms in their seaside home to guests. This will alleviate their financial concerns and help them to provide for their sick mother. Talk about a win-win. Except, that other problems manage to crop up and soon the sisters are dealing with guests, romantic entanglements, and so much more.

Klassen has written a terrific story that introduces us to a family determined to find their footing in a new business venture that manages to open up their world in ways they hadn't imagined. I really enjoyed getting to know Sarah and her sisters, along with their guests - talk about a motley crew. I can't wait to read more about them in the stories to come in this lovely new series. The Sisters of Sea View was such a treat to read! Top notch writing, unforgettable characters, and an unputdownable story - what more could I want?

I would happily recommend this book to fans of Klassen and anyone looking for their next great read - you are going to fallen love with this book! Make sure to check it out!

Beneath His Silence by Hannah Linder

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

Will Seeking Justice Lead to Her Own Demise?

A Gothic-Style Regency Romance from a Promising Young Author

Second daughter of a baron—and a little on the mischievous side—Ella Pemberton is no governess. But the pretense is a necessity if she ever wishes to get inside of Wyckhorn Manor and attain the truth. Exposing the man who killed her sister is all that matters.

Lord Sedgewick knows there’s blood on his hands. Lies have been conceived, then more lies, but the price of truth would be too great. All he has left now is his son—and his hatred. Yet as the charming governess invades his home, his safe cocoon of bitterness begins to tear away.

Could Ella, despite the lingering questions of his guilt, fall in love with such a man? Or is she falling prey to him—just as her dead sister?

my thoughts:

Love, love, love! Beneath His Silence by Hannah Linder is a must-read for everyone! The writing is top notch, the story is unputdownable, and characters are unforgettable. This is one book you don't want to miss out on.

So, what's it about? Well, it's about a woman named Ella who is determined to avenge her sister's death. She goes undercover as a governess to infiltrate the home of the man who killed her sister. Whoa! Of course, things don't go as planned and soon Ella finds herself falling in love with her sister's alleged murderer. Say what? Yep, it is rather shocking to say the least. Then again, the more Ella gets to know him, the more it becomes apparent that he may not be a murderer. And, that is all I will write about the story. Just know that once you starting reading, you won't be able to put the book down for anything - it will suck you right in. I loved staying up til the wee hours reading this one and trying to figure out what would happen next. Such a great book!

Beneath His Silence is a fantastic story - a Regency romance with a bit of a murder-mystery. Plus, gothic vibes that are excellent. I mean it, this book is amazing! Definitely make sure to check it out!

Godmersham Park: A Novel of The Austen Family by Gill Hornby

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

A richly imagined novel inspired by the true story of Anne Sharp, a governess who became very close with Jane Austen and her family by the #1 International bestselling-author of Miss Austen.

On January 21, 1804, Anne Sharpe arrives at Godmersham Park in Kent to take up the position of governess. At thirty-one years old, she has no previous experience of either teaching or fine country houses. Her mother has died, and she has nowhere else to go. Anne is left with no choice. For her new charge—twelve-year-old Fanny Austen—Anne's arrival is all novelty and excitement.

The governess role is a uniquely awkward one. Anne is neither one of the servants, nor one of the family, and to balance a position between the "upstairs" and "downstairs" members of the household is a diplomatic chess game. One wrong move may result in instant dismissal. Anne knows that she must never let down her guard.

When Mr. Edward Austen's family comes to stay, Anne forms an immediate attachment to Jane. They write plays together and enjoy long discussions. However, in the process, Anne reveals herself as not merely pretty, charming, and competent; she is clever too. Even her sleepy, complacent, mistress can hardly fail to notice.

Meanwhile Jane's brother, Henry, begins to take an unusually strong interest in the lovely young governess. And from now on, Anne's days at Godmersham Park are numbered.

my thoughts:

What a beautiful story! Absolutely loved Godmersham Park! Such a wonderful read.

Gill Hornby has written a story about the Austen Family via Jane Austen's friend, Anne Sharp - the governess to Jane's niece, Fanny Austen Knight. Through this story we get to know the Austen family and many of Jane's friends. We do meet up with Jane partway through the book, but she is never at the forefront of the story. No, this story belongs to Anne and her relationships with the Austen family and it makes for a fascinating read. I just loved getting to know Anne, Fanny, Henry, and so forth. Talk about blasts from the pasts.

I just loved getting to read Hornby's reimaginings of the Austen family and the introduction of Anne. It's fun to see them in a new light and to meet someone who was a dear friend of Jane's. Plus, I found it interesting to see the ways in which Anne was allowed into their lives, but kept at a distance due to her position as governess. Social rules were never forgotten. Oh, and, I loved how Hornby inserted historical tidbits throughout - the ways in which women's lives were so limited in what they were allowed to do; along with the roles they had forced upon them, which were so rigid. He really makes you think about these characters (and the people they represented) and their lives in the Regency era. Such a great book!

I would happily recommend Godmersham Park to fans of Hornby and to anyone looking for their next read - you are going to fall in deep with this one. Make sure to check it out!

Millstone of Doubt: Thorndike & Swann Regency Mysteries by Erica Vetsch

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

A Bow Street Runner and a debutante in London Society use their skills to find the killer of a wealthy businessman, but the killer’s secrets aren’t the only ones they will uncover.

Caught in the explosion of the Hammersmith Mill in London, Bow Street runner Daniel Swann rushes to help any survivors only to find the mill's owner dead of an apparent gunshot--but no sign of the killer.

Even though the owner's daughter, Agatha Montgomery, mourns his death, she may be the only one. It seems there are more than a few people with motive for murder. But Daniel can't take this investigation slow and steady. Instead, he must dig through all the suspects as quickly as he can because the clock is ticking until his mysterious patronage--and his job as a runner--comes to an abrupt and painful end. It seems to Daniel that, like his earthly father, his heavenly Father has abandoned him.

Lady Juliette Thorndike is Agatha's bosom friend and has the inside knowledge of the wealthy London ton to be invaluable to Daniel. She should be in a perfect position to help with the case. But when her trusted instructor in the art of spy craft orders her to stay out of the investigation, Lady Juliette obeys. That is, until circumstances intervene, and she drops right into the middle of the deadly pursuit.

When a dreadful accident ends in another death on the mill floor, Daniel discovers a connection to his murder case--and to his own secret past. Now he and Juliette are in a race to find the killer before his time runs out.

my thoughts:

Wow! Talk about a riveting mystery that kept me reading late into the night - loved it!  Millstone of Doubt, the second story in the Thorndike & Swann Regency Mysteries by Erica Vetsch was superb!

Daniel and Lady Juliette are on the trail of a murderer and their case seems to be growing even more dangerous by the second. Yep, the race is on and time is of the essence - life or death hang in the balance. Yikes! So, what's the deal? Well, an explosion at Hammersmith Mill finds the owner dead. Except, he was killed by a gunshot, not the explosion. Daniel found his body and now he is determined to figure out whodunit. And let me just say that suspects abound. Yeah, it turns out that no one is mourning the mill's owner, except his daughter. Oh, and time is running out for Daniel - his job and patronage are both coming to an end. He feels abandoned by everyone, even God. So, he's on a mission to find the killer. Luckily, he finds a partner in Lady Juliette - she has the inside scoop on all of London society, which will definitely be helpful. Except, she's been advised to stay away from the case. Only, circumstances change and soon she is caught up with Daniel in trying to figure out whodunit. And, that is all I will say - you must read this book terrific tale for your self - it is just too good to miss out on!

Oh, what a fun and thrilling read! I enjoyed every minute spent with this exciting new story - it was such a delightful treat! The writing was top notch. The characters were interesting and complex. And, the story was suspenseful with an intriguing mystery, along with a spot of romance. It was terrific! I definitely plan on reading the first book in the series, The Debutante's Code, and am really looking forward to the next book. The Thorndike & Swann Regency Mysteries series is an amazing series to get lost in - and I'm excited to get stuck in it.

I'd happily recommend Millstone of Doubt to anyone and everyone looking for their next great mystery - you are going to LOVE this one to bits! Check it out!

The Lady's Guide to Death and Deception: The Secret Life of Mary Bennet #3 by Katherine Cowley

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

What is a spy willing to do when both her heart and her country are at risk?

Life changes once again for British spy Miss Mary Bennet when Napoleon Bonaparte escapes from the Isle of Elba. Mary quickly departs England for Brussels, the city where the Allied forces prepare for war against the French. But shortly after her arrival, one of the Duke of Wellington's best officers is murdered, an event which threatens to break the delicate alliance between the Allies.

Investigating the murder forces Mary into precarious levels of espionage, role-playing, and deception with her new partner, Mr. Withrow-the nephew and heir of her prominent sponsor, and the spy with whom she's often at odds. Together, they court danger and discovery as they play dual roles gathering intelligence for the British. But soon Mary realizes that her growing feelings towards Mr. Withrow put her heart in as much danger as her life. And then there's another murder.

Mary will need to unmask the murderer before more people are killed, but can she do so and remain hidden in the background?

my thoughts:

Whoa! What a story! I devoured the third book in Katherine Cowley's popular The Secret Life of Mary Bennet series, The Lady's Guide to Death and Deception. It was fantastic! I just loved spending the night reading all about Mary and her new partner, Mr. Withrow - talk about a perfect match! And the drama with her sister Lydia and Mr. Wickham - loved it! Oh, and of course the murder case she is working on for the Duke of Wellington - the intrigue and mystery! This book has it all - romance, family, murder, and thrills! Oh, how I loved it! I would definitely recommend The Lady's Guide to Death and Deception to anyone and everyone looking for a great new series to get stuck in - you are going to LOVE it to bits!!

So, what is the book about? Well, Mary Bennet, of course. And, she's a spy. Yep, she is on duty, along with Withrow, and they are tasked with figuring out who murdered one of the Duke of Wellington's best officers. There are several twists and turns along the way, which help add to the intrigue of this exciting story. As Mary works hard to gather intelligence, she also has to battle her feelings for Withrow - romantic feelings! Oh, my! Plus, her family, which always manages to create drama - this time round she must help out Lydia. And, did I mention that Kitty is now a spy-in-training! How cool! Anyhow, let me just say that there is a lot going on and Mary most definitely has work cut out for her this time round. Luckily, she has Mr. Withrow beside her. And, that is all I will share about this terrific story. You are going to have to read it for yourself to find out whether or not Mary will be successful in work and love.

Remember to check out The Lady's Guide to Death and Deception and the rest of Cowley's books in this wonderful series - you are going to enjoy it so much!! Check it out ASAP!!

The Rake's Daughter: A Brides of Bellaire Gardens Romance by Anne Gracie

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book: (summary from Goodreads)

An earl is forced to play matchmaker for the daughters of a rake in a smart and witty new Regency romance from the national bestselling author of The Scoundrel’s Daughter.

Recently returned to England, Leo, the new Earl of Salcott, discovers he's been thrust into the role of guardian to an heiress, the daughter of a notorious rake. Even worse, his wealthy ward has brought her half-sister, the beautiful but penniless Isobel, with her. Leo must introduce Clarissa to London society and find her a suitable husband, but her illegitimate half sister, Izzy, is quite another matter. Her lowly birth makes her quite unacceptable in aristocratic circles.

However, the girls are determined to enter society together. They’re devoted to each other and despite the risk of scandal and ruin if Izzy’s parentage is discovered, they refuse to be separated. Much to Leo’s frustration, nothing he says or does will convince them otherwise. To further complicate matters, sparks fly every time Leo and Izzy interact.

Called away for a quick visit to his country estate, Leo instructs the young ladies to stay quietly at home and consider their position. But when he returns, he's infuriated to discover that Clarissa and Izzy have launched themselves into society—and with tremendous success! There's no going back. Now Leo must enter society himself, protect Clarissa from fortune hunters, and try not to be driven mad by the sharp-witted, rebellious Izzy, and the rich, unworthy men drawn to her beauty.

my thoughts:

A charming and delightful read, The Rake's Daughter by Anne Gracie, is a delicious treat! Set during the Regency era, this book introduces us to Clarissa and her sister, Izzy. Their father has passed away and as a result of this loss, they have been taken in by the new Earl of Salcott, Leo.  Except, Leo is not too keen to take in both sisters, especially Izzy. You see, Izzy was the illegitimate daughter of Clarissa's father. However, Clarissa and Izzy have always viewed each other as sisters through and through. So, Clarissa refuses to leave her sister behind. Meaning, that since Clarissa  is to be introduced to London society, she wants Izzy to also be introduced. However, Leo is not having it. And, to be honest, he finds Izzy rather fetching. No matter, he is set on doing right by Clarissa. Except, he gets called away and upon his return home, he finds the two sisters have taken it upon themselves to introduce themselves to London Society. Say what?! Yep, they went ahead and did it and turns out that London LOVES them. Now Leo, must make sure that Clarissa is not taken advantage of and that Izzy doesn't get the best of him.  Then again, it appears that Izzy may have stolen his heart.

Wow! Talk about a fun and exciting story chock full of romance and sisterhood. I just loved getting to know Izzy, Clarissa, and Leo. What a great book! I think The Rake's Daughter is the perfect addition to Gracie's series, A Brides of Bellaire Gardens Romance

I would happily recommend The Rake's Daughter to fans of Gracie and to anyone looking for their next great read - check it out ASAP!

Remember Love: Ravenswood #1 by Mary Balogh

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book: (summary from Goodreads)

The undisputed queen of Regency romance is back with a brand-new story perfect for fans of Bridgerton.

The handsome and charismatic Earl of Stratton, Caleb Ware, has been exposed to the ton for his clandestine affairs—by his own son.

As a child, Devlin Ware thought his family stood for all that was right and good in the world. They were kind, gracious, and shared the beauty of Ravenwood, their grand country estate, by hosting lavish parties for the entire countryside. But at twenty-two, he discovered his whole world was an elaborate illusion, and when Devlin publicly called his family to account for it, he was exiled as a traitor.

So be it. He enlisted in the fight against Napoleon and didn’t look back for six years. But now his father is dead, the Ware family is broken, and as the heir he is being called home. It’s only when Gwyneth Rhys—the woman he loved and then lost after his family banished him—holds out her hand to help him that he is able make the difficult journey and try to piece together his fractured family.

It is Gwyneth’s loyalty, patience, and love that he needs. But is Devlin’s war-hardened heart even capable of offering her love in return?

my thoughts:

Love, love, love! I fell in deep with Mary Balogh's latest book, Remember Love - the first in her new series, Ravenswood.  It was just beautiful and heart wrenching to read - I couldn't help but fall in love with the characters and their story. Oh my!

Devlin Ware was always under the impression that his family was amazing, kind, and gracious - the type of family that others looked up to. Except, none of that was true. Turns out his father was a cad who had so many affairs, it was too embarrassing to keep count of them all. Suffice it to say, Devlin became 'persona non grata' within his family when he called out his family for their indiscretions. Yikes! So, he took off and enlisted and never looked back. And then, his father passes away and Devlin is the heir of the estate and is expected to take up the position of Earl of Stratton.  Only, Devlin is wary of of returning home. He's not the same person his family once new - war has hardened him and his heart. But he knows his duty lies at home and so he returns. Once there he meets Gwyneth, the woman he once loved. She knows that Devlin still carries love in his heart and sets out to help him make peace with his family, his new role as Earl, and find his way back to her.

Wow! What a love story! It's slow-going, emotional, and such a treat to read. I loved every minute I spent with Gwyneth and Devlin - what a pair! Balogh has created a wonderful start to her new series with Remember Love - I can't wait to dive into the next book!

I would happily recommend this book to fans of Balogh and anyone looking for their next great read - you will fall in love with Remember Love! Check it out ASAP!

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

To Kiss a Wallflower is the nineteenth book in the Timeless Regency Collection, a bestselling anthology series from Mirror Press. The book features three novellas from acclaimed historical romance authors whose stories reveal that eventually, all wallflowers will have their chance at love . . . This is where it begins.

“The Wallflower’s Dance,” by Jen Geigle Johnson

Lottie Hughes likes people, as long as they aren't too close. Does it bother her that no one asks her to dance? Yes, but she's not sure how to drum up dance partners when she has almost no dowry, no title, and freezes up when anyone tries to talk to her. When she suddenly inherits a huge amount and is the new center of attention all over London, her secret dreams might come true but also her worst nightmares. Suddenly everyone wants to talk to her. Men ask her to dance. And she is inundated with interested suitors. She fights to stay close to the few friends she knows are true. One man saw her before her life changed forever. But does she want to accept his help when he, too, might be insincere?

“Letters to a Wallflower,” by Heather B. Moore

Ellen might be beautiful and considered a diamond of the first water by Society, but she is so very tired of the pressure to marry a titled gentleman so that her beauty won’t go to waste. When her cousin Dinah dares Ellen to attend a ball with no frills and to stand with the wallflowers, Ellen takes on the dare. What’s in the wager for her? The prize cuttings of her aunt’s extraordinary roses. But what Ellen isn’t expecting is Lord Ravenshire to engage her in the most interesting conversation. When she confesses to him of her opposition in marrying for a title, he confesses his distaste of the London scene. They strike a bargain together, one which will either push them apart or lead to a future sweeter than either of them could have imagined.

“To Marry a Wallflower,” by Anneka R. Walker

Charlotte Winters is destined to spinsterhood until she turns down an unwanted proposal and everything changes. With gossip rampant, her father attempts to salvage her reputation by betrothing her to another. Soon she is sent off to her aunt’s to meet Lord Templeton, her intended. Anxiety-ridden, Charlotte begs her aunt to let her observe Lord Templeton from afar before their introduction. She never planned to pretend to be her fictional cousin to learn more about him, or to fall in love with Lord Templeton’s friend in the process. Lord Templeton dreads returning to the empty halls of Newcliff Manor. When his father’s old friend, Mr. Winters reaches out for assistance, Lord Templeton finds himself returning home engaged to a woman he has never met. Desperate to learn more about Miss Winters, he befriends her cousin. He wouldn’t have spoken to her, or lied about his identity, if he’d known the quiet woman would sneak into his heart.

my thoughts:

Love, love, love! What a delightful treat! The Timeless Regency Collection has published a wonderful collection of novellas, three to be precise, in this amazing new book: To Kiss A Wallflower. Each story is written by a bestselling author of the historical romance genre and they are: Jen Geigle Johnson, Heather B. Moore, and Anneka R. Walker. How exciting does that sound, right? Believe me, I was thrilled to get my hands on a copy of To Kiss A Wallflower. I couldn't wait to dive right in. So, I grabbed a cuppa, my favorite blanket, and started reading, reading, reading. I didn't put the book down, until I finished all three stories - and they were fantastic!

A book about wallflowers that finally get their chance at love - how could I resist?! The three stories are: The Wallflower's Dance by Jen Geigle Johnson; Letters to a Wallflower by Heather B. Moore; and, To Marry a Wallflower by Anneka R. Walker. And they are fabulous! There are secrets, dares, and mistaken identities. And, the romance will make you swoon. Of course, gossip abounds, hidden agendas are revealed, and family duty rears its ugly head. All in all, To Kiss A Wallflower is fun and engaging book that has superb writing, unique twists and turns, sweet and roguish characters that you will fall in love with, and a wallflower theme that you can relate to. Such a great book!!

I would happily recommend To Kiss A Wallflower to anyone and everyone looking for their next great read - you will LOVE this book to bits! Check it out ASAP!

Love And Lavender: A Mayfield Family Romance by Josi S. Kilpack

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

Hazel Stillman is a woman of rare independence and limited opportunities. Born with a clubbed foot, she was sent away as a child and, knowing her disability means a marriage is unlikely, she devoted herself to scholarship and education.

Now working as a teacher in an elite private girls' school, she is content with the way her story has unfolded. When her uncle Elliott Mayfield presents her with the prospect of a substantial inheritance if she marries, Hazel is offended. What kind of decent man would marry for her money? Besides, she loves her freedom as a professional, respected woman. When she hears rumors of the school possibly being sold, however, she knows she must consider all her options.

Duncan Penhale has a brilliant mind and thrives on order and process. He does not expect to marry because he likes his solitary life, shared only with his beloved cat. When Elliott Mayfield, his guardian's brother, presents him with an inheritance if he marries a woman of social standing, Duncan finds it intrusive. However, with the inheritance, he could purchase the building in which he works and run his own firm. It would take an impressive and intellectual woman to understand and love him, quirks and all.

Hazel and Duncan believe they have found a solution to both of their problems: marry one another, receive their inheritances, and then part ways to enjoy their individual paths. But when Uncle Mayfield stipulates that they must live together as husband and wife for one year before receiving their inheritances, Hazel and Duncan reluctantly agree. Over time, their marriage of convenience becomes much more appealing than they had anticipated. At the end of the full year, will they go their separate ways or could an unlikely marriage have found unsuspecting love?

my thoughts:

A beautiful story that will make you laugh, cry, and smile. I loved Love And Lavender by Josi S. Kilpack. This book was such a delight to read. It was truly romantic, sweet, gentle, and just lovely. It's a book you won't soon forget.

Hazel and Duncan are pretty much set on not getting married. They each have been living their lives to the beat of their own drums. Until Hazel's uncle offers them each a sizable inheritance if they get married to one another. Say what? Marry for money? Hmm...the two are not happy with the idea at all, except, they both realize that the money would help them out. You see, the school Hazel works at is threatening to shut down and she can't have that happen - that school is her life. And, as for Duncan, he realizes he could buy the building he works at and start his own firm. So, maybe getting married isn't a bad idea after all. Only, Hazel's uncle has decided that the two must live as husband and wife for one full year before they can receive their monies, well that puts a wrench in their plan of marrying and separating as soon as they go their payouts. However, their future plans are at stake, so the two decide to go for it. After all it is just one year and in the end they will be able to do as they please. Except, maybe during that year together maybe their plans for their futures will change - after all, love does tend to bloom in unlikely places, right?

Oh, what a story! I just LOVED Kilpack's writing - it was so much fun to read. Entertaining and engaging, this book was just such a treat! And these characters, they are unforgettable. Love and Lavender is an unputdownable read that you won't be able to stop thinking about long after you turn that very last page. This is one book that I would happily recommend to anyone and everyone looking for their next great read - you will love it to bits! Check it out!

The Barrister and the Letter Of Marque: A Novel by Todd M. Johnson

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

As a barrister in 1818 London, William Snopes has witnessed firsthand the danger of only the wealthy having their voices heard, and he's a strong advocate who defends the poorer classes against the powerful. That changes the day a struggling heiress, Lady Madeleine Jameson, arrives at his door.

In a last-ditch effort to save her faltering estate, Lady Jameson invested in a merchant brig, the Padget. The ship was granted a rare privilege by the king's regent: a Letter of Marque authorizing the captain to seize the cargo of French traders operating illegally in the Indian Sea. Yet when the Padget returns to London, her crew is met by soldiers ready to take possession of their goods and arrest the captain for piracy. And the Letter--the sole proof his actions were legal--has mysteriously vanished.

Moved by the lady's distress, intrigued by the Letter, and goaded by an opposing solicitor, Snopes takes the case. But as he delves deeper into the mystery, he learns that the forces arrayed against Lady Jameson, and now himself, are even more perilous than he'd imagined.

my thoughts:

What a fun and intriguing read! I absolutely LOVED The Barrister and the Letter Of Marque by Todd M. Johnson - such a great story!

Johnson has written a Regency era legal drama that is chock full of mystery, suspense, and historical tidbits that will draw you in and keep you reading late into the night. Talk about a must-read! I just loved getting to know Snopes and Lady Jameson, along with all of the fascinating twists and turns that made this  story ebb and flow with such seamlessness. The characters were just so interesting, you couldn't help but fall in deep with their dramas that entwined them.  And, the historical descriptions were just fantastic - you felt as if you were in that courtroom and on that ship. Such terrific storytelling!

I would happily recommend The Barrister and the Letter Of Marque to fans of Todd M. Johnson and to anyone looking for their next great read - you won't want to miss out on this one!

Miss Lattimore's Letter: A Novel by Suzanne Allain

(Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book!)

about book:

The woman who never made a match of her own is making matches for everyone else in this hilarious comedy of manners from the author of Mr. Malcolm's List.

Sophronia Lattimore had her romantic dreams destroyed years ago and is resigned to her role as chaperone for her cousin. Still, she cannot sit idly by when she becomes aware that a gentleman is about to propose to the wrong woman. She sends him an anonymous letter that is soon the talk of the town, particularly when her advice proves to be correct. Her identity is discovered and Sophie, formerly a wallflower, becomes sought after for her “expert” matchmaking skills.

One person who seeks her out is the eligible and attractive Sir Edmund Winslow. As Sophie assists Sir Edmund in his pursuit of a wife, she wishes she could recommend herself as his bride. However, she vows to remain professional and uninvolved while aiding him in his search (especially since the gentleman surely does not return her affections).

Three unexpected arrivals soon show up at Sophie's door—the man who once broke her heart, a newlywed who is dissatisfied with the match Sophie made for her, and the man madly in love with Sophie's cousin—all wanting her attention. But when her onetime beau and Sir Edmund both appear to be interested in her, Sophie can’t figure out if she’s headed for another broken heart or for the altar. How can she be expected to help other people sort out their romantic lives when her own is such a disaster?

my thoughts:

What a fun and delightful read! I just LOVED spending a rainy day reading Miss Lattimore's Letter by Suzanne Allain. The story was just such a treat to read.

Sophie has resigned herself to the background of social settings. She has no romantic prospects and instead decides to just sit and listen. Of course, she can't help but overhear some conversations, which leave her feeling rather antsy - like, she has to do something, or else the wrong people will be hurt. So, she decides to write an anonymous letter, which does prove to be rather useful.  Except, her secret is out - people find out she wrote the letter. And, soon, Sophie is the matchmaking queen. The only problem is that she is head over heels for one her clients - Sir Edmund. Yikes! What's a lady to do?

Allain has written an entertaining story chock full of romance, drama, and mishaps. You can't help but fall in deep with this characters, their friendships, their histories, and their love lives - it all makes for many LOL moments. Miss Lattimore's Letter is definitely a book that will have you guffawing all the way through. Check it out!

Lakeshire Park: Proper Romance by Megan Walker

(Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book!)
about book:

Brighton, England 1820

Amelia Moore wants only one thing—to secure the future happiness of her younger sister, Clara. With their stepfather’s looming death, the two sisters will soon be on their own—without family, a home, or a penny to their names. When an invitation arrives to join a house party at Lakeshire Park, Amelia grasps at the chance. If she can encourage a match between Clara and their host, Sir Ronald, then at least her sister will be taken care of.

Little does she know that another guest, the arrogant and overconfident Mr. Peter Wood, is after the same goal for his own sister. Amelia and Peter begin a rivalry that Amelia has no choice but to win. But competing against Peter—and eventually playing by his rules—makes Amelia vulnerable to losing the only thing she has left to claim: her heart.

my thoughts:

What a charming story! I absolutely LOVED it to bits. Lakeshire Park by Megan Walker is a delicious read that will captivate you from the start - you won't be able to stop reading! I enjoyed every second I spent with this lovely book and my huge cuppa. It all made for quite an afternoon of reading and tea - my two favorite hobbies.

This is the story of Amelia and Peter. Amelia is looking to secure her sister, Clara, a good future. She wants the very best for Clara.  So, when she gets invited to a party at Lakeshire Park, she jumps at the chance - she just knows that Sir Ronald would be the perfect match for her sister.  Except, Amelia isn't the only one who has their eye on Sir Ronald.  Turns out that Peter is also looking for a match for his sister and he thinks that Sir Ronald fits the bill perfectly.  Uh oh, looks like Amelia and Peter are in for quite the competition.  And, that is all I will write about this wonderful story.

Lakeshire Park is a fun, engaging, and unputdownable story that you will fall in deep with. The characters are such a treat to get to know.  Walker has written a delightful read that you will want to read again and again. I would happily recommend Lakeshire Park to anyone and everyone looking for their next great read!

The Bride of Northanger: A Jane Austen Variation by Diana Birchall

(Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book!)
about book:

A happier heroine than Catherine Morland does not exist in England, for she is about to marry her beloved, the handsome, witty Henry Tilney. The night before the wedding, Henry reluctantly tells Catherine and her horrified parents a secret he has dreaded to share – that there is a terrible curse on his family and their home, Northanger Abbey. Henry is a clergyman, educated and rational, and after her year’s engagement Catherine is no longer the silly young girl who delighted in reading “horrid novels”; she has improved in both reading and rationality. This sensible young couple cannot believe curses are real…until a murder at the Abbey triggers events as horrid and Gothic as Jane Austen ever parodied – events that shake the young Tilneys’ certainties, but never their love for each other…

my thoughts:

A sequel to Northanger Abbey - say what?! Yep, Diana Birchall has written a sequel to Austen's fantastic Gothic-inspired novel.  At the time, Gothic novels were all the rage, so Austen decided to have a bit of fun and create a satire of the genre.  And let me just say, how happy are we that she did so? Northanger Abbey is truly one of her best works.  Luckily for us, The Bride of Northanger picks up right where Austen left off and brings us back to Catherine and Henry.  The couple is happily engaged and looking forward to their future together.  Except, on the night before the wedding, Henry reveals some rather disturbing news...his family is cursed. Ack! Or it should be, ahhh! Only, Catherine is no longer interested in superstitious nonsense, and dismisses Henry's revelation.  However, she soon begins to wonder about the curse when some rather spooky things begin to happen (along with a murder!).  Yep, looks like Catherine and Henry have quite a lot to deal with on their return to Northanger Abbey.  And, that is all I will write about the story.  You just have to experience it for yourself - its a Gothic romance at its very best!

Birchall has done a wonderful job of breathing life into these beloved characters.  Her writing is spot on - the vivid details, the history, and the Gothic nature of it all - oh, my!  She easily blends mystery and romance with a bit of creepiness to create the perfect combination of Austen/Birchall.  I'm serious, this story seamlessly follows Austen's - its uncanny and I love it!  The Bride of Northanger is a must-read for fans of Birchall and fans of Austen - you will fall in love with this book!!

The Weaver's Daughter: A Novel by Sarah E. Ladd

(Thank you to the publisher and TLC Book Tours for providing me with a copy of this book!)
about book:

Kate’s loyalties bind her to the past. Henry’s loyalties compel him to strive for a better future. In a landscape torn between tradition and vision, can two souls find the strength to overcome their preconceptions?

Loyalty has been at the heart of the Dearborne family for as long as Kate can remember, but a war is brewing in their small village, one that has the power to rip families asunder — including her own. As misguided actions are brought to light, she learns how deep her father’s pride and bitterness run, and she begins to wonder if her loyalty is well-placed.

Henry Stockton, heir to the Stockton fortune, returns home from three years at war hoping to find a refuge from his haunting memories. Determined to bury the past, he embraces his grandfather’s goals to modernize his family’s wool mill, regardless of the grumblings from the local weavers. When tragedy strikes shortly after his arrival, Henry must sort out the truth from suspicion if he is to protect his family’s livelihood and legacy.

Henry has been warned about the Dearborne family. Kate, too, has been advised to stay far away from the Stocktons, but chance meetings continue to bring her to Henry’s side, blurring the jagged lines between loyalty, justice, and truth. Kate ultimately finds herself with the powerful decision that will forever affect her village’s future. As unlikely adversaries, Henry and Kate must come together to find a way to create peace for their families, and their village, and their souls – even if it means risking their hearts in the process.

my thoughts:

A delightful story set in England during the early 1800s - what more could I ask for, right? How about a bit of mystery and a spot of romance thrown in for good measure? Yep, this book has it all and I gobbled it up. Talk about the perfect book for a rainy spring day.

The Weaver's Daughter is about loyalty, tradition, technology, love, and family.  Kate's father is a weaver who is tied to the old ways of weaving and resistant to the new technologies that are being introduced.  The mill owners love this new technology, because it is saving them money and producing more product.  Of course, its also putting the weavers out of jobs. Yikes! Kate's father is not happy about any of this.  Especially, the fact that his son, Charles, now works for the mill owners, the Stocktons.  Yep, the family is now broken and Kate is torn - she loves her father and brother so much and hates seeing them so unhappy.

As for the Stocktons, they are rich and successful.  Grandson and heir, Henry, has returned from war and is expected to step right up and help his grandfather run the mill.  The only problem is that war has changed Henry and he is no longer the same man he once was.  Plus, the town has changed and the people have, too.  Henry quickly learns that moving forward in his life may not be as easy as he had hoped.

Kate and Henry are fantastic characters that you can't help but get attached to. I just loved getting to know them and wondering what would happen to them and between them. Yep, the two meet and meet and meet...soon becoming friendly and then friendlier.   Their families may be warring, but their hearts are quite in sync.  And that is all I will say.

Sarah E. Ladd has written a terrific story that will draw you in and keep you hooked all the way through.  The writing is rich with detail and emotion.  The characters are unforgettable. And the story is unputdownable! You will just LOVE this book to bits. I would happily recommend The Weaver's Daughter to fans of Ladd and anyone looking for their next great read - you will LOVE this book!!
