Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

Here's my list for Five Things Friday:

Glamorama.  Bret Easton Ellis has once again hooked me with his storytelling prowess.  Victor is seriously the worst.  He's a male model who is obsessed with his looks, hanging out with the who's who of the celebrity world, and pretty much living his life in a fog.  I've barely started the book and can already tell I'm going to hate Victor.  And yet, I want to read all about him.  This book is vintage Ellis.  Its clever, vicious, and hilarious.  All the name-dropping makes my head spin at times, but I can easily imagine these 'celebrity' models talking/thinking in such a manner.  Oh, and the nineties music and pop culture that drips from the pages is terrific - brings back so many memories. I am seriously crushing so hard on this book. In fact, I'm wondering why I waited so long to read it.
American Horror Story: Roanoke.  What the what?!  This season is strange, twisted, creepy, and different. Its a show within a show within a show, or something like that. Right now the show is in 'season 2' and everyone is dead, except for one person.  I don't know why I was surprised she survived, considering she used to be a cop.  Now, I'm just wondering how the season will end.  I will admit that this season hasn't been all that great.  I've found some of the story lines ridiculous and can't help but wonder what Murphy was thinking.  I feel like the buildup to this season was more excited than the actual show.

The Walking Dead.  Daryl is in hell.  Dwight's story was revealed.  Negan is still Negan.  Last week's episode showed us what life at the Sanctuary was like for Negan's saviors.  Apparently, Dwight's role in Negan's world allows him to take whatever he wants.  He's also in charge of breaking Daryl.  We learn that Dwight and his family left the Sanctuary, but came back.  As a result of this malfeasance, Negan was going to kill Dwight.  However, Sherry (Dwight's wife) stopped Negan by offering herself to him.  She's now 'married' to Negan.  Of course, Negan just loves throwing his relationship with Sherry in Dwight's face.  This back story is supposed to make up feel badly for Dwight.  It didn't work for me. I don't care for Dwight at all. I hated when he gave Daryl the photo of Glenn with his head smashed in.  I know why he did it, but it only made me dislike him even more. I just hope that Daryl gets reunited with his crew soon. Looks like this upcoming episode has Negan heading to Alexandria.  I can't wait to find out how Rick and the gang are faring after their encounter with Negan.  I really hope they are plotting revenge. I want to see Rick show Negan that he's not afraid.  Not sure that will happen so soon in the season though.

London Review of Books.  I'm really enjoying my subscription to this literary magazine.  I love the content - its smart, fresh, and thought-provoking.  There are essays, criticisms, poems, etc.  I find myself dipping in and out of it throughout the week.  I love the way it affects me - making me want to read even more.  I have a new list of books that I now want/need to read, because of the LRB.  I signed up on a whim and now I'm so happy that I did. I'm thinking of subscribing to Granta now, too. What do you think? What literary magazines do you read? Which do you recommend?

The election.  Its over and done.  America has voted (or not) for their new President and so it goes... I am beyond sad that HRC didn't win. I have grudgingly accepted that Trump won. I am trying to remain optimistic, although watching the news makes it hard.  My family, friends and I have all experienced  racism and sexism over the years, so all of these news reports about what is happening is not new to me.  Its always happened.  This is our America.

And now, I will be listening to Hamilton on repeat. I need some inspiring music to cheer me up.

Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

This week has been busy.  Halloween came and went.  And now we are on to the next holiday - Thanksgiving!  Last week I was worried about rushing through the holiday season, but I've decided to just stop worrying and enjoy it all - including all the adverts for Christmas shopping and the schedules for holiday movies from Freeform and Hallmark (which already started!).  So, now I'm bookmarking recipes for Thanksgiving  - crock pot mashed potatoes where have you been?  And what does pie-cake (or is it cake-pie) taste like?  Sounds yummy - layers of pie and cake!

The Walking Dead introduced us to King Ezekiel and his Kingdom.  Talk about a change of pace from the first tragic episode.  This time round we are in a community that reminded me of a Renaissance Fair.  It all just seemed unreal, plus, Ezekiel's manner of speech didn't help.  Of course, Morgan loves it and wants to stay.  Carol hates it and wants out.  I'm getting tired of Carol wanting to be alone and left to die.  I get that she's tired of killing, but just get over it already.  You killed bad people to save your friends/family and yourself.  As for Morgan, I like that he is realizing that perhaps all life is not precious - Negan!!  By the way, I think there was a romantic spark between Carol and Ezekiel - my fingers are crossed!  Next week we see Negan's compound and how Daryl is faring away from Rick and the gang.  Should be an interesting episode.

I finally read my November issue of Vogue.  I didn't care much for the cover as I'm not a huge fan of Emma Stone.  Oh well.
I did love that Vogue endorsed HRC - its their first time publicly supporting a candidate running for President. Oh, and they raved about the new Zadie Smith book, Swing Time, which I am DYING to read!!! I love her writing and can't wait for this new one to come out.  It sounds amazing!!

Here's a summary (from Goodreads):

Two brown girls dream of being dancers - but only one, Tracey, has talent. The other has ideas: about rhythm and time, about black bodies and black music, what constitutes a tribe, or makes a person truly free. It's a close but complicated childhood friendship that ends abruptly in their early twenties, never to be revisited, but never quite forgotten, either...

Dazzlingly energetic and deeply human, Swing Time is a story about friendship and music and stubborn roots, about how we are shaped by these things and how we can survive them. Moving from North-West London to West Africa, it is an exuberant dance to the music of time.

What do you think?  Sounds like a must-read, right?  Vogue knows good literature.  And good movies.  There was a spread in the magazine for the movie, Loving.  OMG!  The photos were amazing and the article about the movie was terrific - made me want to see the film ASAP!! Here's the trailer for Loving:

How good does that look? I can't wait to see it!

I also can't wait to watch the new season of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills - talk about DRAMA!! Lisa and Kyle are back, along with Rinna (aka Big Lips), Eileen (aka Ashley), and Erika Jayne.  Plus, there are two new housewives, Dorit Kemsley and Eden Sassoon (who are they!?!).  From the trailer, we see the ladies travel to Greece, Mexico, and Hong Kong.  And we see lots of arguing, arguing, and arguing - its going to be a great season!

Oh, I'm super annoyed that I spent $18 bucks on nail polish that immediately chips.  I just painted them a deep plum color and now they look like I've been digging in the ground - the polish is all chipped and cracked.  Thanks for nothing, Marc Jacobs.  I think I'm going to stick to Wet n' Wild.  Sometimes cheaper is better.

Did I mention that I ordered some new books:

What do you think? Not a bad bunch, eh? I already received an ARC of the Whitehead on my Kindle, but I just feel like its the kind of book you need to hold in your hand and turn pages in.  The Reader on the 6.27 sounded like a fun read, so I'm hoping it is.  I love the idea that he's reading passages out loud from throwaway books to the people he rides the train with.  As for the Crispin book, I've been eyeing it for some time and finally decided to give it a go.  And the Bret Easton Ellis was bought to complete my collection of his books. I love the way he writes his characters - they are always so jaded, broken, and over the top.  I've barely read a few pages and already I can imagine this world of luxe, privileged models that he's writing about - its mesmerizing.  I'm not sure which one I want to read first, but I know that I'm going to enjoy them all. Have you read any of them? Which do you recommend to start with?

Anyhow, its been a long week.  I'm excited to spend the weekend relaxing, reading, and watching a Christmas movie or two.  Hope you enjoy your weekend!! Happy reading!!

Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

Everyone seems to be posting their Five Things Friday, so I thought this week I'd jump on the bandwagon.  Here are mine:

The Walking Dead. I'm still recovering from losing both Abraham and Glenn. I had an inkling Glenn would be killed after watching the episode from last season where they kill Negan's men at the drop off place that the Hilltop used.  After he kills someone in their sleep, he looks up and posted on the wall are Polaroids of people that Negan's killed.  Talk about foreshadowing.  Except, I didn't want to believe it.  So, when Abraham got Lucille'd I was happy it wasn't Glenn.  And then Daryl had to react to Negan's taunts - ugh!  Why did he have to punch Negan?!  Poor Glenn. That death broke my heart. Especially with that scene at the end where they are all sitting at the dinner table - major tearjerker!

Magazines. I've been flipping through my latest issues of O, Real Simple, and Food Network.  They all talk about Thanksgiving.  Ack! So, now I have it in my head that I need to plan Thanksgiving already. How big should the turkey be? What sides should I make? What flowers should I get for the table setting? The list goes on.  So many decisions and it seems like I'm being rushed to make them. Luckily, the calendar disagrees and I have plenty of time.

Speaking of rushing the holidays, Hallmark is going to start showing Christmas movies day in and day out as of 10pm (EST) on Friday (28th).  Christmas in October....hmm....what happened to Halloween?  Truth be told, I do love Christmas, so I'm pretty excited to kick off that holiday season early. In fact, I may just have to dig out my Christmas decorations earlier this year to join in on the fun.  What do you think? Is it too early for eggnog?

Books. Too many books to choose from. I was on a reading jag and loving it.  Now, I'm stuck trying to figure out what to read next. I was going to read The Mothers, but I'm just not in the mood. I was thinking of diving into Ann Patchett's first book, The Patron Saint of Liars, but I'm not sure I want to read that right now.  Ugh! Its frustrating me that I can't decide what to read.  Usually, I pick up something easy like a YA or chick lit novel to get me going, but this time that trick didn't work.  I read All Laced Up and The Bad Boy Bargain, but they were ridiculously predictable and didn't spark my reading mojo. So, now I'm thinking that maybe I need to pick up an old favorite and read that instead.  Something by Vonnegut maybe. Hmm...what do you recommend?

Lady Gaga's new album, Joanne.  I bought it on a whim and haven't stopped listening to it since. I love the feel of the album and the songs are just terrific. I'm crushing hard on two songs in particular - Joanne and Million Reasons. I have them both on repeat.  Have a listen:

There you have it, my list of Five Things Friday.  And now, I'm off to keep listening to Joanne while I look through my bookshelves for my next read.  Hope you have a great weekend! Happy reading!!

Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

Halloween is nigh, which means that I've been watching AMC Fear Fest and loving it!  How could I not enjoy a day filled with all of the Halloween movies or a Friday the 13th marathon? This week its all about The Walking Dead.  A great way to catch up on all the seasons just in time for the season 7 premiere on Sunday at 9pm - OMG!!! I can't wait to find out who got Lucille(d).  My fingers are crossed that Glenn, Michonne, and Darryl are spared.  Of course with TWD, you never know what will happen.  My sister is convinced that it will be Glenn, especially after last season's, "Did Glenn die?" episode.  I'm banking on Abraham, because he was happy, he fell in love, and he was planning a future - happy usually equals dead.  Anyhow, the wait is almost over - at last!!  By the by, is it so wrong that I can't help but think that Negan is very good-looking? Its hard not to, especially with Jeffrey Dean Morgan playing him.  And I have to admit that every time he appears on screen in the trailers I can't help but think of him as Denny from Grey's.  I loved him on that show and it looks like now I'm going to love to hate him on TWD.

Aside from watching AMC Fear Fest, I've been reading, reading, and reading.  There are so many great books/ARCs to read lately and I am gobbling them all up.  Or at least I'm trying to.  Here are a few of the titles I've recently read and LOVED:
Talk about variety! These five books range from horror to romance and captivated me for days.  I really enjoyed them all.  Of course, now I'm trying to figure out what to read next. I started the new Roxane Gay book of short stories, Difficult Women, but I can't seem to decide whether I like what I'm reading or not.  So far, I've enjoyed a few of the stories, but the rest read like Lifetime movies to me.  Not sure I want to keep reading.  Maybe I'll just put it aside for now.  I was thinking of reading the new Murakami book of short stories, Men Without Women.  I was approved for an ARC - thank you, Edelweiss!! One can never go wrong with Murakami.  Except, I will admit to being slightly disappointed when I read the table of contents for his new book.  Seems that I've already half of the short stories, so its not exactly a new-to-me book.  Hmm...what to read?  What do you recommend?  What are you reading?  Have you read The Mothers by Brit Bennett?  I heard it was excellent and I'm supposed to receive a copy today.  Maybe I'll dive into that book.  I'm not sure why I always find it to difficult to pick a new read after I've been on a reading jag.  Too much to choose from? Either way, I want to read something, but I'm just not sure what I want to read.

Aside from the reading, I've been baking.  I made a skull cake that we devoured.  I plan on making monster cupcakes for my sister's office - they are always a big hit.  And I want to make some banana bread and scones.  I just a need a flat white to get me through all the baking.

I was de-cluttering (again) and found some old CDs that I'd forgotten about.  I wound up listening to Luscious Jackson as I drove around running errands.  Talk about blast from the past. I remember listening to that CD all the time in college.  Now, I couldn't help but wonder why I loved it so much back then.  It was nice change from my recent obsession with Nelly Furtado's music.  Of course, now I'm all about Mike Mills latest musical effort, Concerto for Violin, Rock Band & Orchestra.  As a huge R.E.M. fan, I was stoked to listen to this:
Pretty cool, eh?

And now I'm off to flip through the latest issue of O magazine and then watch some more episodes of TWD.  Happy reading!!

Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

Summer is nigh! How awesome is that? Of course, that does make me wonder where the first half of the year has gone.  Seriously, what have I been doing with my time? Yikes!
  • Okay, so I've had that song "Wonderful World" by Sam Cooke in my head these past few days - on repeat. And I was reading Dance Dance Dance the other night (yes, I'm still reading it. Its taking me a lot longer than I thought it would) and found this:   "No sooner had I punched the PLAY button than Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World" came on.  Don't know much about history...Sam the Man, killed when I was in  ninth grade".   How crazy is that?!  Murakami mentioned the exact song that I've been humming lately.  Talk about fate! I'm supposed to be reading this book!  I absolutely love when weird coincidences like that happen.  And I must admit that I'm really enjoying reading this last book in the Rat trilogy.  Its strange and wonderful at the same time.  One passage I read had me thinking of The Shining, while another section had so many Star Wars references in it that I was thinking I should re-watch the movie.   I'm wondering what will pop up next.
  • Just bought these awesome journals to add to my collection. Yes, I collect journals. I can't seem to help myself.  Now I just need to write in them:

Pretty nifty, eh? As you can tell I'm a fan of TWD.
  •  I've been watching Real Housewives of NYC and OMFG it is crazy this season. So much DRAMA!! I think its got to be one of the BEST seasons ever. The OC series is about to start soon, too.  I can't wait to see Vicki "whoop" it up. Talk about a Bravo addiction!  Of course, that's not the only TV show I'm obsessed with lately.  Grimm is where its at!  I am crushing so hard on this show and its cast and Portland (where it takes place and is filmed).  Each episode focuses on a Grimm's fairy tale, which is pretty cool.  The show's about Nick (a cop) who is a grimm.  He comes from a long line of grimms.  Basically, grimms kill the bad wesen who are usually criminals.  Wesen are creatures from the Grimm's fairy tales. It is a bit far fetched at times - okay, the story lines can get ridiculous and convoluted - but I still really liked it (a lot).
  • Hamilton and Mudcrutch are my go-to CDs when it comes to music.  Yep, I'm still listening to Hamilton (all the time!!). Its just so damn good!  My Shot is my favorite song at the moment, but I'm also loving the rap battle on Cabinet Battle #1. Talk about a smart and creative musical - it is seriously the BEST!  As for Mudcrutch, I am enjoying jamming out to this country rock music featuring Tom Petty (who I LOVE).  The band just released their second album and it is awesome.
  • I've been reading a lot lately.  I got hooked on YA for awhile and wound up reading ( The Problem With Forever; Tell Me Three Things; The List; and Exit, Pursued by a Bear ).  I just finished Love and Freindship by Jane Austen the other day. I found myself laughing so much as I imagined these woman fainting at every wrong turn in their lives - which for some reason was just hilarious and seemed to happen all the time.  Is it evil to be sure? by Lena Dunham was a fun and interesting read.  Its a collection of her diary entries from a year in college.  Talk about strange and fascinating.  And, I'm currently reading the fourth book (Dance Dance Dance) in Murakami's Rat trilogy. I gobbled up the first three books (Hear the Wind Sing; Pinball,1973; and A Wild Sheep Chase) and LOVED them to bits.  I have to admit to being partial to the first book, Hear the Wind Sing.  I think its because it was the first book that Murakami wrote and I loved that he referred to it as his kitchen-table book.  Up next are Frankenstein and End of Watch.  I'm excited for both, especially End of Watch.  Its the final book in the Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King and I just know its going to be fantastic!!  As for Frankenstein, I know it seems weird to read it now instead of in the Fall, but Frances from nonsuch book will be discussing the book on June 16th and I want to join in on the fun.  Apparently, its the 200th anniversary of the night that Mary Shelley was inspired to write the story. How cool is that?!
And now I'm off to continue with Dance Dance Dance. Happy reading!!

Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

Its barely March and I already feel like the year is passing me by.  There are just so many things to do and I keep forgetting to jot them all down in my planner.  Instead I write it all down on note pads.  I am surrounded by lists that have nothing crossed off of them. Ack!  So, what do I do?  I reach for a book or watch an episode of something.  Talk about procrastinating to the extreme.  Oh well, so it goes...
  • Finished watching The X-Files season 10.  Have to admit that I was sad to see it end.  I loved being reunited with familiar characters and alien conspiracies.  Oh, and those stand alone episodes were the best!  My fingers are crossed a movie or more episodes get made.
  • I didn't finish Jane Eyre.  Yep, rereading it did not work out for me.  I just found that I hated Rochester the more I read about him.  So, I put the book down and moved on.
  • I have been reading quite a bit lately.  The other day I read two YA books and absolutely gobbled them up.  One Paris Summer was short and sweet.  It was about a brother-sister duo forced to spend the summer with their father and his new wife and stepdaughter.  There was sibling rivalry, first love, and family drama galore.  I loved it!  The other book was, The Awakening of Sunshine Girl.  It was the second in a series about a teenager named Sunshine.  Having turned sixteen in the last book and discovering her true identity, Sunshine is now dealing with the aftermath of it all.  Forced to work with her father in a different country away from her loved ones, she battles with herself and the dangerous world around her.  I loved getting to see Sunshine find her true powers! Such a fun book!  Oh, and I read The Girl In The Red Coat in one sitting. It was just too good to put down!
  • The Walking Dead is getting so good!!  I am loving Richonne!!  I was so happy to see them FINALLY couple up.  Seriously, what took them so long?  And now we have Jesus and the Hilltop. New people usually mean more drama.  In typical Rick fashion he kills someone and wonders why everyone is looking at him like he's crazy.  And then Daryl suggests that in exchange for supplies from the Hilltop they will kill Negan and his gang - apparently this gang has been taking supplies from the Hilltop in exchange for not killing them.  How crazy is that?  Anyhow, now Rick's gang is on the hook to sort out this craziness.  Of course, I think they are making a huge mistake agreeing to do anything without really knowing what they are up against.  Then again, its Rick, so what did I expect, right?  Ti (from Book Chatter) and I have been emailing about the upcoming finale.  I'm convinced that Glenn is going to die at Negan's hands just like in the comics (I just finished reading the third compendium).  She thinks it might be Maggie.  What do you think? How stoked are you about finally meeting Negan?  I'm curious how they are going to curtail his obsession with the F-word - is it even possible to do so?
  • Was super excited to hear that Neko Case, k.d. lang, and Laura Veirs have combined their musical talents to create an album together.  How awesome is that?! Its titled, case/lang/veirs and will be released on June 17th!  I can't wait!!

And now I'm off to write more lists of things to do.  I'm also going to try and figure out which book I want to read next.  Nothing is calling out to me at the moment, so its hard to decide.  I'm not really sure what I'm in the mood for.  I might just read the latest copy of Vogue.  Hope you are enjoying a great book!  Happy reading!!

Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

February is here and that means Jane Eyre.  Yep, I agreed to reread Charlotte's beloved novel this month alongside Meredith of Dolce Bellezza.  I'm going to start it this week, so wish me luck.  I ask for luck, because last time I read it I didn't enjoy it.  Fingers crossed I fall in love with it this time round.  As for what else I've been up to:
  • Johnny Cash.  I've been listening to his music nonstop lately and loving it.
  •  The X-Files.  Oh my! I heart Mulder and Scully.  I loved this show back when I was in high school and find myself falling in love with it once again.  How could I not?  Did you see the Were-Monster episode!?!  I can't believe there are only 2 episodes left!  I'm going to miss watching Mulder and Scully investigate new cases.  I keep hoping they announce more episodes to come.  Fingers crossed!

  •  Downton Abbey. I just finished watching season 6.  I can't believe its over.  Such a good show.  The acting, the wardrobe, the history, and Highclere Castle.  I spent the past weekend watching the last season unfold.  I was so glad to see Tom back at Downton - he's Mary's BFF and needed to be back at home.  Carson's rigid ways regarding upstairs/downstairs life was a bit grating this time round.  I loved seeing Edith flourish in London.  Mrs. Patmore's house of ill repute was good for a laugh.  Barrow's bout with depression was heartbreaking - yes, I know he's a jerk, but nonetheless I felt for him.  So much happened, but I don't want to give anything away for those still watching it on PBS.  Suffice it to say, the season ends as it should.
  •  Valentine's Day.  Buying treats and cards for my loved ones.  I'm also thinking of baking a heart shaped cake.  I'm not usually so excited for Valentine's Day, but this year I am.  Must be all the pink and chocolate swirling around in the stores that has finally brainwashed me into liking Valentine's Day.
  • Lent.  Starting today I need to give something up. Hmm...what should it be?  I'm thinking sweets.  Or maybe social media.  Definitely not reading.
  • Books.  I really need to buckle down and read my own damn books like I had intended to at the beginning of the year.  Why is it so hard to resist all the new little pretties that seem to be calling out to me?  I just bought a copy of Muriel Barbery's latest, The Life of Elves. And I just got my hands on Lahiri's latest, In Other Words.  Talk about being a book buying addict - ack!  So, I'm going to limit my book buying to only ten more new books this year - the horror, the horror!  I figure if I limit myself, I will be forced to choose only the books I am truly excited about. Fingers crossed this works for me.  Plus, I can look to my own shelves and finally pick up all those unread books and dive right in.  Wish me luck!
And now I'm off to read my copy of MORE magazine.  Hope you have a great week! Happy Valentine's Day!!

Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

I just finished re-watching all of The Office on DVD and now I can't seem to get this song out of my head:
Dwight and company played it on the front porch of his house.  Have to admit that I wished they had played more Decemberists songs, but enjoyed their version of this song nonetheless.

I'm writing this post and realizing how long its been since I last wrote anything for my blog.  I suppose I've just  been so caught up in the holiday season and every day life, that I've let posting reviews fall to the wayside.  I definitely need to sort that out come the new year.  As for what I've been up to...

  • All things holiday.  Shopping and wrapping gifts.  Baking yummy deliciousness to devour.  Listening to Christmas music whenever I can.  Watching holiday movies and loving it.  Writing out Christmas cards.  Planning Christmas lunch.  And so much more...fa la la la la.
  • Reading.  Yes, I have been reading even though I haven't written about any of the books.  I read the latest Shopaholic book - Shopaholic to the Rescue.  I love the series and loved getting reunited with Becky and following her on the search for her dad and Tarkie.  I also read the newest book in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series - The Woman Who Walked in Sunshine.  Once again I was solving a case with Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi - loved it!!  I have to admit I will cry when this series ends.  Thanks to NetGalley, I read Dear Thing (talk about complicating a friendship with surrogacy) and The Doll's House (I'm a fan of these Helen Grace thrillers and can't seem to read them fast enough).  Oh, and I'm currently reading Emma, which has been slow-going for me.  I'm hoping it picks up the pace soon.  Classics are not my favorite genre, but I want to read more of them...so we will see how it pans out.
  • My dreams have included books lately, which I love.  Lately, I seem to always be shopping in bookstores in my dreams.  Last night's book was one that hasn't come out, but that I requested on NetGalley called, Yuki Chan in Bronte Country.  This morning I found out that the publisher approved my request for it - hurrah!  The other night I was looking through Miriam Toews' books in my dream. I mentioned how I've only read All My Puny Sorrows (which was beyond great), which wasn't true.  In reality, I've read Irma Voth and Swing Low by her as well.  Anyhow, I do plan on reading the rest of her books, as she's become one of my favorite authors.  Still can't get over AMPS.  I have to admit that I always love it when books appear in my dreams - talk about inspiration for new reads.
  • I read online that Murakami's old library checkouts were released.  Yep, we can now find out what he read when he was a teenager.  Some say its an invasion of privacy, while others declare it to be of public interest (considering who Murakami is).  What do you think?  I can see both sides, especially as a HUGE fan of his work.  So, I was actually excited to find out what he read.  Of course the information was limited and all we learned was that he read the French writer, Joseph Kessel. In the end, I'm not sure how interesting the library info was, but I also liked learning something new about one of my favorite writers.
  • Culling closets and bookshelves.  Yep, its that time of year when I need to let go of the old and unworn and unread.  I have to be honest and admit that I hate letting go of things.  I really do.  But its time.  So, I'll be sorting through handbags, shoes and clothes this week.  As for my books, I'm going to be tough and impartial.  No more clinging to books.  I don't have the space to keep them all and someone else could be appreciating my unread books.  Fingers crossed I get it done.
And now, I'm off to bake some banana bread - yum!  Hope you have a Happy Monday!!

Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

I have music on the brain lately.  Must have been that final episode of Empire that was filled with awesome performances that has me jamming out lately.  I've actually been listening to the show's soundtrack on repeat lately when I drive around town.  On my laptop I have Stevie Knicks, Tracy Chapman, and Johnny Cash playing in the background.  Although I did find myself getting lost in Sufjan Steven's latest CD thanks to NPR.  So, yeah music has been taking over lately, while reading has sort of fallen to the background.  Not to say that I'm not reading.  I'm just reading magazines instead of books -  O magazine, Real Simple, Glamour, and Redbook. The weird thing is that I keep adding titles to my TBR list and requesting ARCs off NetGalley.  I think my problem is that I can't seem to figure out what it is I want to read exactly.  Part of me wants to buy this:
I hear that this book is AMAZING!! So, I'm pretty keen to read it.  However, another part of me wants a familiar author to read.
But, I think I might just read something on my kindle from NetGalley.
Or I'll just wait for this book to come out next week.
So many choices...perhaps, too many choices.  Maybe I just need to grab a book and start reading and see what happens.  What do you think?  Do you have any book suggestions for me?  If not book, what about TV shows?  I was hooked on Empire - who doesn't love Cookie and hate Lucious?!?  That show is BEYOND!  I was disappointed with The Mindy Project and can only hope that if it comes back in the Fall that it will be much improved.  I'm still obsessed with The Walking Dead.  The season finale is on Sunday and I can't wait!  Will Rick and his gang take over Alexandria or will they go back out into the wild?  Talking Dead is gonna have Darryl and Scarol, which means its going to be AWESOME!!  I'm excited about the upcoming season of Real Housewives of NYC. Bethenny is back and I'm sure that will make for some interesting drama.  From what I've read, she doesn't get along with Heather (holla!), so that will make for some good gossip amongst the ladies.  I have just started watching Southern Charm and already want to make a trip to Charleston - the people are crazy on the show, but the city looks amazing.  And, of course I'm watching Shahs of Sunset.  Gotta love Reza and his crazy 'stache!  Cripes! I am a reality show junkie, eh?  Well, I am also hooked on Better Call Saul - I love watching Saul before he was Saul.  Plus, its cool to see some of the characters from Breaking Bad on the show - Tuco is still super CRAZY and Mike is still pretty quiet (I loved getting to know his back story).  I'm hoping we get to see Jessie and Walter at some point down the line.  How cool would that be?

And now I'm off to check on my baked ziti.  Its in the oven and smells delicious - let's hope it tastes delicious as well.  I'm trying to test out new recipes from the cookbooks cluttering the kitchen.  I found a new recipe for scones, so I'm thinking of baking them over the weekend.  All I need is some clotted cream and good strawberry jam and I will be set. How yum does that sound?  Tea and scones is the perfect pairing!  Hope you have a great weekend!  Happy reading!!

I'll leave you with a taste from the new Sufjan Stevens CD, Carrie and Lowell:
Enjoy!

Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

I can't believe its already February and I've only blogged a handful of times.  Its crazy to me how lax I've been about posting, but I must admit that I love it.  I don't feel stressed or bogged down about blogging and as a result I'm actually enjoying reading other blogs again and leaving comments.  As for what else I've been up to (aside from reading up a storm):
  • Lent is here and that means sacrificing something.  This year I've decided to give up Facebook and Twitter.  I spend way too much time on both sites and feel that its time to take a break.  So, instead of checking news feeds and tweets, I will be reading or writing.  Most likely reading more often than writing. Wish me luck!
  • Another reason I've been MIA from blogging has to do with my health.  I have autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and that tends to exhaust me, but lately I've been feeling some pretty intense pains.  So, I went to my doc and found out that my gallbladder doesn't look too great.  Turns out that most people with AIH wind up with dead gallbladders.  Talk about scary!  Now I need more tests.  Ugh!  Hopefully, my gallbladder is functioning at 20% or above, because then I won't need surgery.  Fingers crossed!
  • I've been listening to the 10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged CD like crazy lately.  I love Natalie Merchant's voice and was feeling rather nostalgic, so I've had this CD on repeat.
  • I've been culling my books - again!  I already have a bag ready to give to my cousin.  He takes them to the local senior citizens' center.  This need to declutter my bookshelves derived from Oprah's latest issue of O magazine which was all about decluttering - spiffy in a jiffy, anyone?
  • I'm watching more TV lately.  Empire, The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and Child Genius are just a few of my favorites.  Of course I'm still watching The Mindy Project - who doesn't love Dr. L?  However, now with Mindy being preggers, I'm not really sure how the show will play out.  A baby just doesn't seem to fit with the usual crazy antics of the characters - maybe that's the point?
  • I'm back at the gym.  Yep, I decided that after my recent medical drama (possible dead gallbladder) that I need to focus more on my health.  So, I have been waking up before its light out and heading to gym.  So far, I'm really enjoying it.  I fill my iPod with music that makes me want to move and just go for it.  Fingers crossed I can keep it up and make it a habit.
  • I've been reading more Murakami.  I'm a huge fan of his work, but have yet to read all of his books.  I just don't want to run out of his stories, so I read them piecemeal.  Earlier this week I read his latest short story in The New Yorker titled, Kino.  I absolutely loved The Strange Library and had a craving for donuts afterward.  I must admit it was weird and fascinating.  I kept thinking that the beautiful young girl who helped him was his mom in some form.  And last night I read South of the Border, West of the Sun.  It was one of his most straight forward stories that I've read in quite some time and I didn't know what to make of it.  I was riveted with Hajime's meetings with Shimamoto.  I kept thinking that she was going to spring some crazy surprise on him.  I honestly thought that she was going to commit suicide when they went to the river.  I hated not knowing more about her.  And I wish I could have seen Izumi's face after that man said kids were scared of her.  Of course, after reading Hajime's description of it when he finally saw her I could understand what that man meant.  As for his family and the easy manner in which he was willing to give them up - well, my heart broke for them.  Hajime had to learn that the past is the past for a reason and that sometimes it is better off left forgotten.  Typical Murakami through and through.  I loved it!
And now, I'm off to read watch an episode of The West Wing.  I usually watch the series in the Fall every year, but for some reason I'm craving me some Sam Seaborn, Josh Lyman, and C.J. Cregg.  I'm not sure what book I'll read this weekend, but I'm leaning toward J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy or Jane Green's Summer Secrets.  What do you think?  Any recommendations on what to read next?  Ta for now.  Happy reading!!

Bookisn and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

You guys, its already mid-November! That means that Thanksgiving is nearly round the corner - Cripes! All of this holiday rush has made me fast forward a bit - like, I've been listening to Christmas tunes in my car and baking up a storm (pumpkin muffins!).  I'm loving it!  As for my reading, I've been knocking out one book after the other.  Right now I'm in the middle of Stephen King's latest, REVIVAL.  Its about religion, special electricity, and good v. evil.  So far I am hooked, but admittedly a bit confused as to where King is going with this story.  I'm eager to find out what truth Jamie will find out about Jacobs - I'm pretty sure its not going to be good.  As for the other books I've recently read:

Not a bad mix, eh?  I'm also reading Sebastian Faulks' homage to Wodehouse, JEEVES AND THE WEDDING BELLS.  Its really good so far.  I'm even thinking of beginning a Wodehouse novel once I'm done with King.  I just love the high-jinks that Bertie always finds himself in.  Of course, I did just finish reading this great article about Hilary Mantel in my copy of Elle magazine, so I'm tempted to read her book of short stories, THE ASSASSINATION OF MARGARET THATCHER.  I just got a copy in the post and am pretty excited to dive into it, so that may trump the Wodehouse.  Then again, I have just downloaded the new VERONICA MARS book.  Blimey! There are just so many great books to read, I'm not sure where to start. Hmm....

Aside from reading, I've been watching Scandal, The Mindy Project, Gracepoint, and The Walking Dead.  I might start watching the new season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills - I can't help but love these shows (they are crazy addictive!)  Oh, I did manage to see Death Comes to Pemberley on PBS and absolutely loved it.  I found myself captivated by the country, the estate, the clothing, the story, the drama, and the characters.  I just knew that Wickham hadn't killed his friend, but wasn't surprised one bit by his role in Bidwell's life.  Such a good show!  Makes me excited for Downton Abbey's new season in January - from what I've read its been quite the year for everyone in Downton!

I've also been writing a bit more, which has been great.  Not all of it is good, but at least its something.  I'm trying to keep up with my journal as well.  I've been neglecting it and its time to change that.  So, I bought the Oprah book, WHAT I KNOW FOR SURE, and have been highlighting and noting things down from it in my journal.  Its been a really interesting read - very positive and encouraging, which is exactly what I need at the moment.

And that's what I've been up to lately. How about you? Any good reads or TV shows to recommend?  Hope you all have a great weekend!! Happy reading!!

Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

You guys, the weekend is almost here and that means sleep!  This week has been a bit of an emotional drain, but now its time to put those feelings aside and dive into a few days of reading, sleeping, and spending time with family.  And, finally getting to watch some good TV or movies - it is Halloween month after all!
  • Since it is October I baked my Halloween sweet treat that I am famous for amongst family and friends.  Monster cake! Talk about delicious!!  Chocolate cake, butterfingers, cream cheese, caramel and whipped cream - need I say more.  Nom. Nom. Nom.
  • The Walking Dead was super good this past Sunday.  It was chock full of intrigue - like, who is Father Gabriel and what secret is he hiding.  Who is driving that black car and where is Beth?  Were the hunters watching Rick and his gang or was it Morgan?  And, did Bob get bit; if so, does that mean the hunters are eating tainted meat?  Oh, and why did Tyrese lie about killing that creep?  Ugh! So many questions!  I loved it!
  • Look what I bought! Hurrah! I saw her interview of CBS This Morning and went out to buy a copy ASAP.  I love this series and am excited to find out what Becky is doing in La La Land.
  • I'm excited to watch The Good Witch's Wonder this Saturday.  I just love this movie series on Hallmark and look forward to the new movies that air each year.  Especially, as they tend to keep the same cast throughout the movie series - I hate when they swap out actors for new ones.  This film centers on Cassie's stepson getting married and I'm sure there will be plenty of drama surrounding that event, along with a bit of magic.  I can't wait!
  • I'm finally reading my copy of O magazine.  So far I've jotted down a few new book titles to add to my TBR list and have thought about using a few of the recipes mentioned for Thanksgiving.  Plus, I loved Gayle's find - the steps to happiness (because who doesn't want to be happy?)  Here goes:
          • 1. Decide to be happy
          • 2. Make it a priority
          • 3. Let go of judgements
          • 4. Be present
          • 5. Be grateful

And now, I'm ready for the weekend.  Hope you all are enjoying some great new reads.  Happy reading!

Bookish and Non-Bookish Thoughts...

Its Friday and the weekend is nigh - woo hoo!  I've been ill all week with a horrid cold, so I've been watching too much telly and reading magazines.  I did start reading two new books (Us by David Nicholls and The Red Book of Primrose House by Marty Wingate), which I am really enjoying.  And I've been jotting down recipes ideas for Thanksgiving - yes, I know its early, but I can't help it!  Anyhow, just wanted to share a few musings with you:
  • My mom's 60th birthday party was a success - hurrah!  She enjoyed getting to see her family and friends and dancing the night away.  My sister and I were going crazy all last week and the day of the party trying to sort out last minute details - it was stressful, but well worth it all in the end.  Everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves - lots of eating, drinking, and dancing.  It was such a great night.
  • Murakami didn't win the Nobel, again.  UGH! I'm getting so annoyed by this - why can't they just recognize that his writing is worthy of a Nobel?!?  At least I have his new book to look forward to:
  • I've become obsessed with watching Oprah's Super Soul Sunday shows - they are so good!  I always find myself feeling inspired afterward.  The one with Elizabeth Gilbert was great!  I loved her coffee can story - I've been repeating it to family.  And, I've started my own coffee can.
  • The Walking Dead has begun and I am hooked.  That show just gets better and better. I loved watching the gang get out of Terminus.  I loved watching Carol be such a badass.  I loved watching Daryl and Carol reunite - and Carol and Rick.  And, I really loved seeing Morgan at the end of the episode.  This season is going to be AMAZING!!
  •  Sophie Kinsella and Alexander McCall Smith both have books coming out this month and I am super excited about it.  I love the Shopaholic series and can't wait to find out what Becky Bloomwood is up to now - especially as she is in Hollywood!  As for Precious Ramotswe, I am so eager to learn about what new cases she is solving and how her family and friends are faring in beautiful Botswana.  October is going to be a great reading month!
  • I've been listening to the new James CD, La Petit Mort, for days now and find myself loving it more and more.  I first discovered this band in college and have been listening to them ever since.  I was lucky enough to see them perform at Wembley Arena in London during grad school - they were fantastic live!  Here's one of my favorites by them:

And now, I'm off to tackle the rest of my Friday.  Hope everyone has a great weekend!  Happy reading to all!!
